Drinking the Koolaid

Plaid shirt - J. Crew, thrifted
Skirt - homemade? thrifted
Custom Harness - Audra Jean
Flats - vintage

So I'm the last person on the planet to own some J.crew. Thrift stores rarely get in J.crew pieces, maybe because the quality is good? The brand is beloved? Do they burn their clearance pieces rather than let them filter down as Goodwill new stock? (Don't quote me on that, please.)

Regardless, I've nearly never seen a single J.crew piece in years and years of thrifting. And somehow in one trip managed to find a shirt and two pairs of corduroys. I grabbed all three because they were all roughly in my size, in good shape, and were things I liked.

One of the pairs didn't fit me so I sent them over to Lynne, but the other two things fit. I'm not sure why the previous owner gave up this ultra soft plaid shirt, but I'm pretty sure it's one of the greatest things I've ever thrifted. I've just been waiting for it to get cold enough to wear. And it pretty much wasn't as cool today as it had been. I give up with this weather.

Doing a Sheila sitting pose
Regardless, I'd still never be able to pay retail for something from J.crew, even on sale, but I do understand the hype now. Are you a fan of J. Crew or other hyped brand? Did you buy into it? Did it live up to the hype?

Btw Lynne is hosting a thrifted piece round up so drop her a link/email by October 1st to join up.

  1. You silly goose. JCrew on sale is cheaper than that brand you love I can't think of the name of....the one with the sewing machines in the window.

But that said I don't shop there for myself because I have way too um shapely a figure for their stuff to look flattering on me but I have got Dave stuff there over the years for no more than $20 on sale. He still owns all of it about 12 years later so I would say it is definitely quality stuff. He has this one sweater I know he has had since highschool which for us was in the early 90s...

    1. Most of my stuff from All Saints HAS been cheaper than J.crew because I buy it on steep clearance, ebay, or it's been gifted. I've never bought anything new from there. And I've trolled the J.crew site and the prices on sale are still way too much, especially without free shipping and no returns. I should also mention I don't have a physical location of either store near me so all my shopping is online!

    2. Yeah in store is a whole different story. Seriously the prices in there are under MUCH cheaper. I wasn't kidding when I said about $20 for a lined pencil skirt.
Don't get defensive I was just poking you and wasn't saying you bought anything new.

    3. Aw! I'm not defensive - just wanted to explain. I know in-store tends to be cheaper. I'm always jealous of people's super cheap Anthro finds. I don't even bother with retail stores anymore unless it's something I find online because I know I'm spoiled by thrifting. It warps your brain I tell you! If I could thrift shoes more successfully, I'd probably be less of a shoe-snob.

And a bye-the-bye this is just a heads up for anyone else reading - small town living SUCKS for shopping.

    4. I'm still gobsmacked that my unshapely figure is pro'bly the reason J. Crew looks so good on me...lol.

I have crawled around in the Anthro sale room, like three times, because it's almost two hours away from where I live. Thank God :P

  2. That top is super cute and perfect for fall/layering! Most of my J.Crew items (only about 10 things probably) are thrifted. I've bought a sweater, 2 necklaces, and 2 shirts at the J.Crew outlet (extra 15% educator discount - wheee!) otherwise I am WAAAAY too cheap to shop there. Plus their sizes are crazy big in some things. I should not be swimming in an extra-small... just no.

  3. J Crew stuff IS nice - I have owned a couple of thrifted J Crew pieces, but yeah, I'm too cheap to shop in their store ever. What I have found I have liked though!

I love your shirt! It's a great find! And if it's soft, that's even better!! Love it with the pretty green skirt! I wish I could find more thrifted J Crew and Anthro - but it just doesn't happen much!

  4. You know what's crazy? There is a Goodwill in Boulder (the city that I work in) that has, I kid you not like every other piece of clothing is J. Crew! It's insane! I have a lot of J. Crew from our Goodwill. It's pretty crazy, but I have not seen J. Crew at any other thrift store ever. So . . . you need to come out to Colorado to go shopping there with me ;-)

I love your skirt and it is perfect with your new fabulous J. Crew shirt!

  5. Love the Sheila pose : > And that's a great shirt, I love the feel of a soft flannel shirt. I have thrifted a few J Crew pieces, but not many, I guess a lot of it gets ebay'ed?

  6. Such a cte top and perfect for fall and layering. I've never been a J. Crew fan. It tends to be too normal and their colors are usually muted. And I agree, spendy. Great for investment pieces I suppose.

  7. Ever lovely! I really like the gentle colours of the shirt and harness with the more saturated green, bookended by the russets of your hair and shoes. Great Sheila-pose too!

Can't say as I've ever owned anything J. Crew; brand alone being not nearly enough to make me buy something.
Allow me to second your small town shopping sentiment!

  8. Lol, I saw the pose before I saw the caption and thought, "Wow! Love the pose!" You do look so tall sitting down, though.

We don't have J. Crew up here, so I have never owned a piece. Definitely have never seen it in the thrift stores.

I really like the harness over this shirt with the full green skirt - great vibe about the outfit.

  9. I adore JC but it is really hit or miss quality-wise (but isn't that almost always the case now with all retailers?). I pretty much buy all my stuff on sale or via Ebay - I think JC almost never makes it to a thrift shop because people figure they can make more off of it on Ebay or something.

  10. I love your skirt. I love the five J. Crew pieces I own, two bought used, one a gift from you, and two on clearance at the factory store. And I don't even like Koolaid :P

  11. @lynn I said "too umm Shapley" because I didn't want to say "my boobs are way too big for JCrew"

  12. Love your outfit today. I'm really thinking I need to invest in one of these harnesses. You look so amazing in them!

    I never got into JC.

  13. I also have never seen JC in thrift-stores. Their conservative style doesn't generally appeal to me, but you snagged nice pieces.

  14. I rarely see J. Crew, but sometimes. Will try to pay more attention now. I am a sucker for Laura Ashley vintage, but I love floral-y, girly things too. :)

  16. i rarely buy anything new, much less j. crew. but like you, if i do find it at a thrift store, i will almost always at least try it on! you look great in this outfit. i like the belted shirt!

  17. I haven't seen any J Crew before (sometimes all sorts of brands come up in UK charity shops). I think there may be a shop launched in London tho? It's the M. Obama effect. Is J Crew - in price and quality - anything like Banana Republic? That is beginning to arrive in the UK.

Love the plaid shirt. Softness is a key criteria for me - scratchy clothes just make me sad.

    1. It is a bit similar to Banana Republic. I actually like BR and have thrifted a lot of pieces by them over the years.

    2. Ah, thanks for confirming. I have some nice jumpers from BR, I liked how helpful the staff were, and how the same thing comes in lots of colours.

  18. Love that shirt too and this outfit. Yes J.Crew is great though I only own a few of their pieces purchased on clearance. Even their promotions and sales are high for my budget. And yes I have bought into the hpe of many stores/brands, but at the same time have always purchased them on sale. I have never bought into Anthropologie. I have seen great things I like there but their prices are super-high, sorry - not worth it.

  19. That is a wonderful shirt. It looks like it would be really versatile.
I wore JCrew about 20 some years ago. It was a lot more preppy/classic back then. A lot more. We don't have a store here either. I tried to buy some boots from them online last year, but they were sold out of my size.

  20. Oh how cute you look in a sitting pose. :)
