Welcome to Layer Up Week! This is a Fashion Challenge created by Keely and I so we can remix our wardrobes and get the fullest inspiration from our clothes. This week is definitely going to be a challenge for me because the weather is calling for mid to high 60s by midweek. But I will do my best to incorporate the challenges without overheating. Today I layered my tops and my necklaces. This outfit was actually worn on Sunday. It was something comfortable and easy to wear.

I also got a (really awful) haircut over the weekend. I went in for a trim and it came out very butchered. I asked for my bangs to be trimmed "below my brows" and half of them were well above and the other half well below. Thankfully I know enough about cutting hair to fix it myself, but it really ticked me off that she didn't listen to a single thing I said. She pretty much gave me the same cut as the girl she had just finished (which I specifically said "I want X, not Y"). I wish I could find a single consistent stylist I can afford.

It's outerwear-palooza. I wanted to share some of my outerwear in honor of my newest coat bought on clearance from All Saints. And also because I haven't had as much cold weather to show them off. I'll keep it short on words since there are tons of photos.

Final day of my official unofficial Sheila Week. I remembered the brand was carried by Anthro while I was puttering around Goodwill waiting for the hubs to pick me up. These pants were in nearly perfect condition (one button needed some reinforcement), and cost me about $3. I actually came out with a few great scores, including a silk and cashmere blend sweater for D. I also snagged a skirt and 3/4 cotton tee by Patagonia.

I probably need to do a clean out though, because right after I got out of the store, my mom called and told me "I got you some new clothes!"

I'm sure everyone was anticipating my yellow skirt, but I couldn't wait to wear these trousers. Instead of my yellow skirt, I wore the snake ring and "our boots". Sheila has these same boots in a gorgeous blood red.

This outfit is a reinterpretation of this 2009 outfit. I think my attention to details has upgraded in the past few years, but my tastes have stayed relatively the same. The biggest difference though? I wear brown now. Three years ago, I discounted this whole color range because I hated a certain shade of brown. I now appreciate rich cognacs, deep siennas and oxbloods, and my favorites - bitter cacao shades.

Wow! Talk about color. I didn't even realize how colorful I must have been to everyone else today until seeing the photos. Day 4 of Sheila Week yields this skirt. It's got lots of lovely colors, a fun handkerchief hem and tiny bells! I literally had bells on today. It was pouring rain when hubs and I headed out to classes today. (Seriously look at the curl in my hair!!) so I had to sub the school brick wall instead of my usual one. I'm sure I got some weird looks, but I was just happy the rain slacked up for a bit

Also a little share today - My new coat! Eee. This came in the mail yesterday. Hubs had been needing a new coat for awhile, and I finally talked him into trying out All Saints. And of course, I couldn't not order me one, especially at 1/4 the retail price. I did have to hem the sleeves up an entire two inches, but I did learn how to hem a lining all by myself!

I had to add a little bit of other gifts into today's outfit with Ally's gifted socks. I usually wear these socks if you ever see me wearing my Eject boots. Something about the design matches the boots and makes me want to wear them. I felt powerful today.

Nothing like a good (slightly unintentional) theme week to make getting dressed easier. Don't forget next week starts Layer Up! Week. So I'll have a whole other week of inspired dressing coming up. Why don't you join me and Keely?

Sheila-Week Continues! She gifted me this awesome top with a cool patterned gradient and pattern mix ruffle. I accidentally laid this jacket near the top one day and realized how perfectly the gradients went together. It's been pouring almost all day, so I stuck with jeans and really tall boots to keep my feet dry.

So here are 11 random things about me:
- I got married the day after I turned 18, and just celebrated my 4th anniversary with my dear hubsies.
- I am still in college, but I've nearly finished my AS in Psychology. It's not been easy, because school caused a lot of anxiety in my life, but I've slugged along and I'm nearly at the end of this part.
- I was (and still am) a Harry Potter fan. I got the first book when I was 9 or 10 years old and got lost into one of the bigger fandoms since Trekkers and Star Wars fans. However, I'm quickly gaining a new fandom in Sherlock BBC. If you haven't seen this yet- please do!
- I read tons of information every day. I joked on someone's blog that I read "a million words a day", but it's probably even more than that. I even watch television with my Nook in hand.
- I am still working on my "book". I started writing sometime in November. I got about 11K words down in 6 days. Burnt out, I left it for a month and recently edited it. Now I'm backing to writing. I'm trying to decide on where to host it, but possibly fiction press.
- I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.
- I still don't have a driver's license. Though I'm actually working on it.. somewhat.
- I'm shy, despite the fact that I talk. A lot.
- Did I mention the Sherlock thing? I did, oh well..
- My favorite materials are wool and leather.
- I write lists obsessively.

Here are my answers to Terri's questions:
1. Paperback or e book reader?
Aaah! Both. I don't care so long as I can read it. Although my e-reader can carry many many books along with me where ever. It was a gift. I wouldn't have bought it myself, but I use it absolutely everyday.

2. Skirts or pants?
Aaah, also both.

3. Coke or Pepsi?
Ohgod Coke. I haven't had a Pepsi since I was 13? Maybe younger. I drink tea or water at places that serve Pepsi. I blame that on my years of living in Georgia.

4. Summer or winter?
Fall. Hah!

5. If you had to learn a foreign language which one would it be?
Latin. I am furious with myself that I gave into peer pressure and spent my Latin classes goofing off instead of learning. While no one "speaks" it, it's an incredible language.

6. What is your comfort food?
All food? I guess traditional Southern food. Anything really. I love food, all kinds. I do have this little Chinese place I love to go when I'm sick. They use really fresh veggies, and the wonton soup is way better than any chicken noodle soup.

7. Which fashion trend would you never wear?
Never say never. Although probably those tennis shoe high heels? I'm not really fond of them. Harem pants. Yeah, I like the idea of them, but tapered pants look awful on my chicken legs.

8. What is your dream job?
I don't know. I'm still sussing that out. I want to do everything. I'd love to be a writer, but like drawing, I don't know if that's more a hobby or what. I want to do something in fashion, or television, or marketing! I just love lots of different things.

9. Which is the next place you would like to travel to?
New York City! I've never been farther north than Lexington, Kentucky. My family never traveled very far. I'd love to go to London. It's a dream to go to the UK and travel around, sight seeing places I've only ever seen in pictures. Not sure you could actually get me on a plane though! I'd also love to go to Canada and go shopping in boutiques and Fluevog stores! *swoon~*

10. What are your wardrobe staples?
My All Saints stuff. I know, that's not staples. But I have a varied wardrobe. My favorite outfits always feel pulled together by some of my more "unique" pieces, which are usually All Saints. Or I could say my shoes. I have lots of great shoes. I suck at buying basics, so I make everything work for me as I can.

11. Who is your most favourite person in the whole world?
I guess the typical answer would be my husband, no?

Embiggen me!

Like I said last week, sitting in class requires different clothing demands than my usual daily habits. We're continuing on with the cold mornings, but sunny spring-like days. This grey dress has been invaluable as a base. I skipped the usual belt and let the tailored shirt be the only waist definition. I also wore these two pieces of jewelry that Sheila had tucked inside the pockets of the jacket she sent me! (I'm thinking of doing a Sheila-week, thoughts?)

The three fingered ring is something I've been lusting after for-ev-er. Snakes being one of my favorite jewelry motifs. The statement necklace has a good weight to it. Meaning it doesn't have the problem with slipping around like most of my necklaces.

A good pair of bright tights, comfortable shoes, and my new purse topped everything off nicely. I was comfortable all through the day. I was a little chilly around my feet until the afternoon, but I think on Thursday I'll revisit the idea of this outfit, (with a pair of boots).

Sheila and I don't swap with each other, instead we've been shopping for one another - on opposite sides of two countries, for months. I recently found these Tsubo sandals in her size for $6. She's sent me a number of goodies (including everyone's favorite yellow skirt) - and Saturday, this gift showed up in my mailbox.

I was originally hunting a denim jacket to add to my slowly growing arsenal of jackets. I thrifted one, but ultimately gifted it to a friend because it wasn't quite right. Sheila found this denim-colored suede jacket that is absolutely perfection for these 60F winter days (seriously, anyone else concerned over the weather?) - and it's a better alternative to denim in my book. I'm all giddy over how soft it is, how incredible the fit, and how perfectly it's going to fit into my wardrobe.

I enjoyed a great weekend of writing, watching movies, and even had a lunch out with mom (thanks to Christmas giftcards!). Life may not always be perfect, but right now, it's awesome.

I remember hearing the TGIF joke from my grandmother at an age where sharing a joke with swearing in it was probably inappropriate. Because of that, hearing "TGIF" still makes me chuckle. If you haven't heard the joke, here ya go:

A business man got on an elevator.When he entered, there was a blonde already inside who greeted him with a bright, "T-G-I-F!"
He smiled at her and replied, "S-H-I-T."
She looked puzzled and repeated, "T-G-I-F," more slowly.
He again answered, "S-H-I-T."
The blonde was trying to keep it friendly, so she smiled her biggest smile, and said as sweetly as possibly, "T-G-I-F."
The man smiled back to her and once again, "S-H-I-T."
The exasperated blonde finally decided to explain."T-G-I-F' means 'Thank Goodness It's Friday.' Get it, duuhhh?"

Thankfully it's Friday for real. It's been an insanely busy first full week back to school. I've been woefully behind in my commenting, but I've kept up with reading my blogroll. I'm hoping by the end of next week, I'll have this new schedule down pat.

This outfit was pretty much a direct rip off of Bethie the Boo. Red and grey has been a major obsession of mine for the winter months, so this outfit came together so easily. The trousers were a 99 cent find. I love Limited pants because they are cut perfectly, and it seems like whoever owned them before me had them hemmed - so I didn't have to! The leather tie felt like the perfect thing to tie it all together.

Ahh, ever since I purchased these tights and boots, I've been trying to build the perfect outfit around them. I actually put this dress back on super saturday because it needed hemming. It was a foot too long, and on the hanger looks so plain and blah. I wound up going back for it though because I just kept thinking of things it could go with. I trimmed it a liiiittle shorter than I meant to, but that just made it a perfect option for layering.

I actually get out of one of my classes for today, but I will still be taking Tuesday and Thursday to create comfortable non-binding outfits. My favorite thing about my harnesses is the lack of lower stomach compression, but great waist definition. I hate sitting around in trousers for four hours in uncomfortable school desks. So dresses will definitely be in greater rotation, especially as it warms up.

Don't adjust your screen - here at MMD, I've decided to "black out" my daily post to bring awareness to SOPA and PIPA. If you don't know what those are, I've rounded up a few helpful links to sort things out.

Big sites like Wikipedia and Reddit are shut down today.

Google explains here.(Btw have you seen Google's front page?)

Need a nerdtastic breakdown? George Takei explains why his normally busy media sites are quiet today.

You may have heard SOPA is off the table, but PIPA is not. ...And maybe not SOPA, either.

Still not getting why these two bills are so important to oppose? Here's a happy comic that dumbs everything down so we all can understand. (Warning: bleeped sockpuppets)

Here is a response from the MPAA about the "black outs," and showing their ignorance to what these black outs are exemplifying. These sites are not punishing users, but are blatantly spreading the message that too many have missed.

SOPA and PIPA are not going to "fix" piracy and "save" American jobs.

If you are in the US, call, email, mail letters to your representatives expressing your opinions on these bills. For those not living in the US, this may not mean much, but it means a big difference for the entirety of internet users, including you. If you know me personally, you know I am not a political person at heart, but I feel very strongly about keeping the internet a free and open media.

It's my birthday! Today I am 22. And in the interest of being an adult, I'm going to all my classes like a big girl instead of partying. I have gotten lots of well-wishing, some thoughtful pressies and cards. Even managed to snag a pair of sandals on super sale.

Admittedly, I don't know that I have too much energy to party. So I'll probably spend my not-class hours reading blogs and catching up on Grey's Anatomy via Hulu.

What my photos actually looked like.

My outfits are running about a day off schedule with the start of the school year, but hopefully I'll be back on track by the end of this week. This was yesterday's errand outfit, mostly seen in snatches beneath a coat. I'd love to re-wear this in a summer version, but the infusion of bright pink definitely helped brighten up the day. (Speaking of pink, my hair-pink is nearly washed out. I think going to the pool has killed it)

Fake leather has improved vastly in my life time. Even "cheap" options are getting more realistic and less plastic-y. I normally still opt for real leather any time I have the chance, but I added not one, but two faux-leather pieces on my last trip to Goodwill. This NWT Papaya vest is very soft and fit great. I expect it will get a lot of wear, especially as a spring/summer layer. And more than anything I love finding clothing with "tough" details in white rather than solid black or charcoal grey.

These Nine West booties were on the shelf. I couldn't find a size but tried them on anyway. They were about a half size large, but that was perfect to add an insole into for a perfect fit. Oddly I found the size later stating "7 1/2" - a size and a half larger than my normal size. From the front, they remind me of old fashioned boxer boots.

Though I only use Polyvore for these inspiration posts - I decided in an effort to remove Polyvore from my blog entirely (and begin honoring the New Year's requests), I'm trying something different for this Fashion Challenge Inspiration post.

Sheila of Ephemera is a master of layering, and I am especially impressed by her layering long sleeve under short sleeve/sleeveless dresses to extend their wearability.

Sal of Already Pretty has got some great cropped over long looks, and so does her blog and real life friend Audi of Fashion For Nerds does too.

Keely wears maxis better than anyone I know, and her long cardigan + long maxi look will keep you warm and stylish. Tanesha of Girl with Curves does a great set of layered dresses here.

Shen Dove of Shen Dove Style does a great job of layering her purple maxi and yellow cardigan with a jacket. Ladies don't have the monopoly on style, this pin shows how the fellas can layer their cardigans with a blazer and look super stylin' while they're at it.

I thrifted this marled banded sweater this past week. It was very ugly on the shelf, but the more I carried it, the more I loved it. Turns out - it's an Anthro brand (I believe). It was 99 cents. Score! It was actually quite warm. I did some walking around and hit the pool. Next week is a holiday so the pool is closed on Monday, and the swim team meets on Tuesday.

You can see my natural hair texture today. There was snow on the roofs and patches of grass. Humid cold days are odd, and lead to wavy hair.

I'm feeling kind of burnt out on clothes, but the good news is we have Fashion Challenge! The post can be found HERE and hopefully some good inspiration ideas to get me and you all re-inspired while getting dress.

Fashion Challenge: Layer Up

Brr, it's cold up here in the Northern Hemisphere, aaaand it's Fashion Challenge time, Bloggers! Keely and I have done it again! This time we're focusing on Layering Up! It's chilly, and layers are great for keeping warm, but can also add depth and dimension to otherwise basic oufits. For those who might be in the Southern Hemisphere - don't feel left out. Please join us and show us how you layer up for the warmer months.

Remember, we don't require that you participate every single day if the challenge week. If the idea is not for you or circumstance (work, school, etc) makes the particular challenge impossible, do what is appropriate for you, but we do encourage everyone take away from this whatever inspiration you can. Aaaah! Snow! And Class! Super busy day today, so excuse the lack of sartorial exuberance. I tossed on things that were layered and warm. I knew it would be cold, but it started snowing and sleeting midway through the day. I didn't get pictures until I got home, so it's dark, blurry, and windy. Oh, I also got my first negative comment on my fur coat. But also lots of people petted it/me.

I reacquainted with some old friends and made a couple of new ones, in which, I possibly found a new D&D group to join. I did get up early, put dinner in the oven to slow cook, and even cooked breakfast. Not sure I'll do that everyday, but it felt like a good start to my school year.

I did swoon when I stumbled on this cotton sweater in goodwill. It was that perfect shade of lime-y citron. I layered it up with my fav knit dress and layered the underskirt to mirror the pink in my hair. Tall socks warded off the damp because I wanted to eek out one more day of non-boots. We're expecting "winter weather" (what the news is calling it) starting tomorrow. Tomorrow which is my first day of classes. Brr!

Sorry for today's tired face. I stayed up all night reading The Fault in Our Stars. No spoilers, but it is an amazing book that I highly recommend everyone go check out right now. Small warning: Keep some tissues handy. I spent 4 out of 6 hours bawling. So worth it. Oh! And all the copies of the first printing are signed by the author.

Thanks to everyone for your amazing conversation yesterday's post. I learned more than I expected on the topic. The word "modesty" holds a myriad of connotations, some that were unexpected for me. If you haven't weighed in, please do leave a comment on yesterday's post.

As for today, things are little less thought provoking. I've worn too much black since the first of the year. This outfit was a little too lightweight for the weather, but I'm staying inside so I didn't worry too much. The tee shirt is another colorway of this one. I'm not typically a multiples purchaser, but I really like the cut of this top.

In good news, birthday goodies are trickling in! I got a lovely card and birthday gift from Ally, a bizarrely matching free birthday drink postcard from Starbucks, and my pre-ordered (signed!) copy of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars.

Yesterday D and I celebrated my birthday early with a friend of ours who is moving back to school this week (school starts on Thursday!!!). We went swimming and had dinner at incredible restaurant I haven't been to in years. I had a crawfish pasta with a very flavorful cajun salmon. I still have half a slice of lemon curd cake in the fridge for later. Yum!

I consider myself a fairly modest dresser. And by that, I don't mean I eschew color, pattern, unique design. I don't intend to hide myself with my clothes. In fact, my clothes often scream "I'm here!" So what do I mean by modest dressing?

I like clothes that cover my body. I like my legs to be covered. I prefer my necklines to be open, but not too low. I like my arms to be bare if it's warm enough, but my bra to remain hidden. I like my feet enclosed if possible. My 'modesty' means balancing skin with coverage, casual pieces with edgy ones, wildly designed shoes off set by lower heel heights, and voluminous with fitted.

I can't remember exactly which etiquette advocate first exposed me to the importance of balancing a low neckline with a lower hemline and vice versa, but I still feel strongly influenced by that message.

I still like to push my personal envelope on occasion by wearing a mini-dress with OTK boots, shorts with a tunic, or free-boobing in a bra-impossible top. I hope to push it further by utilizing sheer fabrics, different silhouettes, and challenging colors, but for now I generally stick to my personal comfort factors.

This grey casual dress hit some of my favorite things - cowl neck, sleeveless, comfortable thick material, good seaming for fit. It's perfect to layer up on this winter day, but I can also see it with a simple belt and flats or sandals for easy summer days. I am going through the hem debate with my petite self, but to be honest - I might not. I've messed up some stuff by hemming it badly, dresses most often. The dress only cost me $4, and some days - I like my knees covered.

What does "modest" dressing mean to you? To me, it means balance.

Be Not Afraid... of Your Hair

So you've made your appointment with your favorite stylist, or maybe you just walked into a local salon intending to just have that inch or two of "dead ends" (all hair is dead, people) cut off. You have that knot of dread in your stomach that the stylist will chop all your hair off and it won't be just as long as it was anymore.

Let me start my personal hair story by saying, I spent many years in my teens with a deep brown mane of long hair. I grew it out in high school to get rid of the black hair leftover from my "goth phase". I was so proud of my length that I wouldn't do more than ask for chin length or longer layers. I always parted in the middle. For years. I was stuck with hair that always felt boring.

One February day, I got tired of the lank, tangled mess. I waltzed in a salon. The woman asked, "Just a trim?" I'm sure dozens of women sat in her chair and said just that. I didn't want to be typical, I wanted some change! "Nope, chop it off!" I exclaimed.

Now don't mistake this post for me advocating you to chop off all your hair. I've been through dozens of hair colors all shades of the rainbow. I've gotten trims to alter the shape of the growing out pixie cut. I'm now thrilled with my current a-line bob in natural henna red with pink.

But! I am sad. I read people complaining all the time that they want to, but are frightened, to try a new color or style because it might not work for them. Let me share a secret - it'll grow back. Yes, it may mean you spend some time with not your ideal perfect hair, but it may also mean you spend the next decade (or worse, decades) never knowing that another style MIGHT just suit you better.

This is my plea to try something different. If you needed a sign, now is the time to change something, do something drastic - try out that color or style you've been wishing you could. Changing your hair may be what you need to really amp up your personal style. So do me a personal favor, give yourself a chance to do something different. Even if you just take down that ponytail for the day.

Guys, guys, seriously it's 63F (17.2C) in January! I didn't even wear my jacket I carried today. I knew instantly when I thrifted this sweater that I would wear it with this skirt. I tried on three different shoes before settling on these ankle boots. I think these stood up to the extremely poofy skirt where the slimmer shoes did not. Yes, those are novelty heart socks. ♥

We had a furry visitor in our yard this afternoon. A cat was just chilling and watching me take photos. I snagged a very blurry picture of the little guy, but decided to only share the story, not the photo.

My hair is definitely on the red spectrum now. Which was the original intent. But it was pretty cool with the pink. If I decide to keep the bright colors, I may pick up the fuchsia version next time. I love that it's very subtle from far away, but as I move around you get flashes of bright hair. I admit, I stole the inspiration from a couple of What Not to Wear episodes. If you caught this week's new episode (Beryl), the girl had really faded pink hair. Instead of tamping down her style, Ted gave her incredibly bright pink hair. Really gorgeous.

In a much earlier episode, they gave this one participant a shaved portion over one ear and dyed it bright blue. I love it when they advocate for a more 'alternative' style instead of putting everyone in a plain bob with bangs + suit/suit alternative. That works for some, but not all people.

When you woke up this morning, pulled out your clothing for the day, did you think "this will do"? Did you feel excited, did you have an emotional response? Did you pass by that special dress, or piece you are "saving"? I'd been saving this dress for my birthday party. Like I said before though, plans changed. So I decided, Thursday is special enough to wear this fun velvet dress. I felt sassy and dressed up, even though I wasn't doing anything special.

I started feeling better yesterday after some good food and a lie-in. So D and I finally got our butts out of the house to walmart to buy him some white shirts. I finally got inspired to dye my hair the way I've been planning. I used Color Rays* in red. It started out very hot pink, but it settled closer to red this morning. I think it'll fade back to pink, but I'm super thrilled with the results right now!

The sneezy cold I had before Christmas seems to be creeping back. It's made me very draggy and wanting to sleep in when I need to be shifting my schedule back to get up for my classes. School starts back in a week (uggh), but I am actually looking forward to it. I'm also super excited because Grey's Anatomy is starting back up tomorrow. I hate hate hate cliffhangers!

Today's sartorial choices were made based on the temps and my exhaustion. I wanted something warm and simple. This angora sweater has been a godsend for cozy days. It's not the most beautiful piece of clothing, but I guarantee if you felt it, you would have bought it too. What do you wear on days when you don't feel 100%?

Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback on my 2011 round up post. I really appreciate honest answers! I promise, no turning this blog into a polyvore thing.

It was super chilly today. I had lots of pre-classes errands to run (omg book prices). I tossed on my vintage wool dress, wool tights, and mega-wedges for extra stomping action. This is the first time I've tried belting this dress. Most of the time belts won't hit high/wide enough for this 80s dress. I thought I'd show you guys how switching up tights, shoes and accessories can change up a very bold statement dress.

First up, a graphic print headband, light colored tights and wedge ankle boots. Next a matching hat, OTK boots, and a wrist cuff. Finally the first wearing of this dress was on my birthday last year. I wore it with my gifted Star Trek pin, fishnet tights, knee highboots and a DIY graphic print messenger bag.

Don't let that thin tunic deceive you - we had another 30 degree weather drop, and there were flurries the whole drive to the pool. D and I decided to kick off the new year with a trip to the civic center's indoor pool to get some much needed exercise. We're both hoping to make this kind of trip a weekly (at least a couple times a month) habit. It's a minimal cost way ($3) to keep us in shape any time of year. The temps are temporarily up. So I decided to pull out one of the thin tops I picked up. These will be great in the cooler days of summer. I actually bought this blouse in two colorways, I just wish they had this one in the size I needed, but I loved the navy so much I got it anyway. The socks were a Christmas gift from Ally. I've actually worn them a ton already, under tall boots, but I wanted to show them off today with my clinic boots. Does owning a pair of Jeffrey Campbell's make me a real blogger now? Lol.

Today I will be sewing a pair of swim-shorts for my birthday-hopeful idea. I will also be writing up a yearly round-up post to go live on Sunday. Finally time to get on the ball with some of my to-do list!

The blouse is new thanks to a giftcard from my uncle. It reminded me a bit of Anthro stuff - only with the Old Navy price. I picked up four new tops from Old Navy, and still had $6 left on the card. I paid it forward though and gave the girl behind me in line the rest of the card. (I'm not much of a retail shopper)

Like most people, I'm feeling the lull of the holidays. The New Year is on its way and soon after my birthday. I'm attempting to make plans, but it's always hard to do in the wake of the holidays. I'm eternally jealous of those with summer birthdays for their possibilities when it comes to celebrating. Instead of pushing it too much, too fast this year and winding up disappointed, I'm trying to go along with the ups and downs.

D and I have rented Lego: Pirates of the Caribbean and purchased You Don't Know Jack outright. I've got a long list of reading to catch up on, and Season 3 of Castle to watch. In addition to a lack of scheduled stuff, we've overstuffed on delicious, meaty, carb-laden Christmas foods. So today we headed out to the store and picked up a bunch of fresh veggies to have a veg night in.

This was my outfit for the jaunt to the store. I have been meaning to try these Hepat boots out in a different way. Since I've had the pirate-y influence lately, I scrunched them down and folded over the top. I'm not sure it's my favorite look, but I like the possibility.

I love when my brother is in town because we're both "go" people. We do so much, I haven't been home at midnight since the 23rd. We shopped, ate, watched movies, even priced my tattoo (gotta make an appointment though! I hoped for a walk-in, but I'm going to need to save up). I'm sad he had to go back home, but we had such a great Christmas. Now I get to look forward to my birthday coming up in a couple of weeks!

Today is to be a rest and recoup day, except for a quick excursion to the post office (Sheila and Keely, keep an eye on your mailboxes!). It's rainy, wet and looking like snow. I bundled up in lots of layers and furry stuff, including my new hat from Mom! It pairs awesomely with my thrifted fur coat. Unfortunately I've been leaning heavily on jeans/trouser based outfits since it's gotten so cold.

What you can't see from this outfit is my socks. My MIL gifted me two pairs of merino wool socks that are the dreamiest things to ever grace my feet. She bought them at a tractor supply store of all places. I've got intentions of getting more.

Every year my calendar informs me that December 26th is Boxing Day (in Canada). And every year I wiki it to remember what it is. What it means to me? Shopping Day.

I spent my Christmas Eve with the hubs, two friends, and my brother. We exchanged gifts and had a really great time eating at Waffle House (only place open!) and playing You Don't Know Jack.

Christmas Day was spent waking up at the in-laws and opening gifts. Eating breakfast there. Then I visited my mom for lunch. My brother came to pick me up for our annual movie night (Sherlock Holmes 2, again - seriously go see it). We also went out for a couple of drinks and appetizers before hand at TGI Fridays and spent a few hours talking and catching up.

So after many days of eating too much, not sleeping enough, and lots and lots of visiting. I had a very excellent Christmas and received many thoughtful and much appreciated gifts. But now I'm happy to head out into the fray and spend my gift cards.

This post is beyond late because when my brother is in town we run around and have lots of fun - hijinks ensue. We hit the stores, grabbed food, went through boxes of old family photos - me not remembering half of them, and generally catching up. He's headed back home, so hopefully I will catch up on the blog reading and posting as the week progresses.

I couldn't wait another day to wear my Christmas gift - Jeffrey Campbell Clinic boots! Omg, I'm so crazy in love with these. I think they even beat out my Alice + Olivia boots because these are more comfortable and will be easy to rock come warmer months. I'm desperately hoping they re-release these in white. I'm keeping my ebay-eyes peeled in the mean time. These boots are just so freaking cool and comfy. You can catch a close up of these delicious boots below. D and I were invited to my chef-uncle's Christmas party this year. When planning out my outfits this week, I knew this would be a perfect outfit. I've been hunting a sheer blouse since summer. Unfortunately I'm quite picky about fiber content. So when I found this XL women's long sleeve cotton shirt, it was perfect. I removed the sleeves, took in the body and added some buttons.

I also realized that a sheer blouse had more versatility than I realized. My newest obsession has been layering collared shirts under sweaters. This polka dot blouse is a little different than most dotted shirts. The spacing really appealed to me.

Also I realized I haven't had any doodles on the blog for awhile. So I decided to remedy that today!

What happens when you're going to see the newest Sherlock and you can't decide what neutral you're going to wear for the day? Logic says? All of them. And throw a harness on it. I wish I had invested in a few of these cardigans in a few colors. Especially with how mild our seasons have been. It's 60 freaking degrees in the middle of December. So very strange.

I spent all weekend sick. I did way too much running around in the rain/cold last week. However lots of rest, cold meds, and a marathon of Castle got me out of the house this morning for some last minute shopping. D and I also grabbed lunch since I'm still getting tired really quickly. I got a kids meal at Chick-fil-a and it came with this ridiculous~~ly amazing~~ cow head watch. It's borderline morbid. Needless to say, I am totally wearing it around.

The rest of my outfit was planning around my buttonflower cluster. This cashmere sweater is cozy, but a bit plain. I dressed it up last time with one buttonflower, but this time I wanted to try my cluster idea. I wore my plush fur coat, but it was actually too warm for both wool and fur. Not my favorite outfit ever, but it kept me warm and comfortable.

Hopefully I'll be on the mend fully by Wednesday. I've got a wonderfully busy holiday planned. Mom's birthday is Wednesday, my uncle and grandparents are having a party Thursday, Saturday with friends and Sunday with my immediate family. Friday is still open, but I'm hoping to find something to fill that day.

Wow, what a 48 hours! I have been incredibly busy since school ended. Yesterday I was at my Mom's. She and my grandmother took me to the dentist. I've been without insurance for a few years, so it's been awhile. But I got a clean bill of health. So far, I don't even have to have my wisdom teeth out. I also was able to tell the family the great news of maintaining my grades for another semester. I picked up my newly repaired shoes (Thanks, Ally!), did way too much laundry, and even had dinner with a classmate of mine. Now I'm reading to fall over for the weekend and sleep in.

Make up and earrings

Full admission ... I shopped. I did pretty well not spending over Thanksgiving/Black Friday Weekend, but I wound up in Goodwill yesterday with full intent on breaking the no-shopping-at-all ban. I did some celebratory spending because of all my good news. I'm not beating myself up, because I was already prepared to drop the ban until after my birthday. For those who have been commiserating with me, stay strong in your own shopping bans!

Now to talk about my outfit for today (which inevitably means describing the weather). We had a 30 degree drop overnight. Living in TN makes for some weird weather patterns. So I layered up my collared shirt with my star sweater for extra warmth. I kept the palette dark to avoid looking too preppy. The outfit was based around these earrings that the lovely Keely sent me for Christmas. She also sent me a lovely star necklace. Does she rock or what?! Thanks, Keely.

I couldn't find the last time I wore this top on the blog! I have no idea why because I adore it. I usually hate wrist exposing shirts, but something about the shape of this feels so easy and retro. Can you believe Christmas is barely more than a week away? I'm making plans left and right and have no idea how I'll get everything done. Much less start planning for my birthday in January! I hope it doesn't turn bitterly cold by then.

Freaky weather. It is a sublime 64F right now. Which means I get to pull out this denim blazer that has yet to be worn on the blog. Actually this is another husband-created outfit. I added the accessories and socks, but the core outfit was his idea. This denim blazer was a great fit - and only 99p when I got it. I have struggled to style it (at least for colder weather, I can think of 70 spring based outfits right this second).

Hubs suggested red pants, flats, and a "light colored top". I vetoed my lace top, another All Saints top and a purple tank... before settling on this All Saint tank. I nearly got rid of this because the trapeze shape isn't flattering alone and doesn't lend well to belting, but it's quickly becoming a favorite layering piece.

I will be absent from the blog world for the next two days. I have some scheduled posts ready to go, but I'm visiting family and won't have internet access (other than email via phone).

I was so frustrated with yesterday's outfit! I couldn't put a finger on what exactly I didn't like, but as much as I wasn't happy with yesterday - I LOVE today. I had planned on leaving this skirt packed away until summer.. and I planned to shorten it. But throwing around things trying to plan for this week, the hubs told me to pair my "fluffy star sweater" with this skirt and my purple boots. Does he have good ideas or what?!

I love the double ombre effect. I swear the skirt is less neon pink in real life, but it is pretty loud. It was originally purchased with my dear friend Eek in mind. She wears pink like a bad ass. I went without any more accessories than some eyeliner and one bracelet (on the hidden wrist, grr! I always do that). The last time I wore this sweater it was so itchy I had to wear an undershirt. I think it just has to be cold enough to wear it because I'm not having any issues today.

New shoes are great. I love new shoes, almost as much as I love new books. However, I also love the shoes I own, I love unique one-of-a-kind pieces, and I love getting a good deal. Why would I spend more money on shoes I already own when I can just buy new shoes, you ask?

Because cobblers and shoe repair people ROCK. They can fix broken straps or buckles, replace insoles, replace outsoles, heel tips/caps, even completely replace the heel if you want! They can stretch leather shoes if they're too tight. Shoe repair can be as remarkable and important as tailoring.

I got these amazing vintage shoes. The leather was in remarkable shape (especially if they are truly from the 60s), but the inner and outer soles were in rough shape. So rough, that my brother-in-law accidentally dropped a tv on them (really long story) and completely cracked the sole. However, thanks to Ally's generous Christmas gift and the amazing family who owns the shoe repair place - I'll have renewed one-of-a-kind shoes in 4 days. Do you take your shoes to the cobbler?

Fashion Challenge: Pop of Color

Finally! Color! I am so happy to be able to finally share this score. This lovely sweater is my second thrifted Christian Dior item ($5!). I found it while scanning the men's department for teh hubs, but I knew he wouldn't wear this. But I couldn't leave it! So I logically brought it home and waited until I had enough projects built up to pull out my machine and take it up. It's a thinner knit acrylic so I figured it couldn't hurt to take it in. I cut off a bunch from the bottom, the sides and the cuffs of the arms. It still has the slouchy grandpa cardigan look, but in a much more flattering shape.

I paired it with two of my favorite neutral items: Dark wash skinny jeans and this gradient grey tee. I wore my Vogs to combat the preppy feeling of the cardigan.

Aaaand our last neutral for the week: Navy! An excellent color that is vastly unrepresented in my wardrobe. I was originally drawn to this navy blouse because of it's super saturated undertones. I've had enough lack of color so I finally pulled this skirt (that really needs to be ironed) and bright tights.

I also carefully wore these vintage flats. They're beeeeaaautiful, but they desperately need a trip to the cobbler. The out-soles are very slick, the heels need new caps, and the insole is completely detached. (Not to mention the "vintage smell") The leather itself is in beautiful condition for the age though, and they fit like a dream. Unfortunately they'll probably go back up until I can take them for the repairs they'll need. I look forward to wearing them come spring.

As Wendy B put it in my comments, I'm feeling much more "in the pink" today. I've seen many people feeling under the weather though - so a friendly reminder to take your vitamins and don't forget to rest! Thanks to everyone for the well-wishing.

Aaah, Cognac. One of summer's trendiest shades. One of the orange-brown shades that make a great neutral. And one of the few neutrals I do not partake in. I just don't often get drawn to the brown shade. I have two things that could possibly qualify as cognac. The leather parts on these faryl robin boots, and these Frye flats.

Instead of cognac, I decided to pull out my favorite white dress and layer it with this cropped sweater I thrifted a couple Super Saturday's ago. I kept passing it up during my normal thrifting, but at a $2 I couldn't leave it. Speaking of not-leaving, I thrifted another fur coat not too long before the ban. This one is even heavier than the black one (turned vest). So it hasn't made it out of the closet until today. Today is freaking cold! But I felt glamorous today.

This was half of what I planned today. I swapped out my originally planned skirt for pants because Brr! All that rain left it chilly. After sleeping 14+ total hours yesterday, I feel much better. Still a bit sneezy, but not as bad. I believe my "cold" was really allergies from the doggie visitor we have for the week.

Now how could I do a brown outfit and not include my harness?! (The answer - I can't). My preference for browns tends to be toward those 'bitter' shades that are less saturated or super saturated bronze/cognac colors. I added in another favorite neutral - military grey-green. I never had this color in my closet until fairly recently, and managed to pick up three pieces of it in a short time! It's super versatile.

This outfit was worn out to mail Christmas cards/presents! A bit late, but with finals and last minute homework assignments I'm a bit behind this year. Have you sent out your holiday cards yet?

Grey, like the weather, like my mood. Like my current state of health. I'm feeling very grey today. I dressed up my favorite sweater dress with my grey-blue snake print silk blouse. Silk is great for underlayers. It's warm, but thin. Admittedly, I only wore this to run grab some potato soup from my favorite lunch place. I brought the soup home, kicked off my boots, added some leftover broccoli to the soup for the vitamins and plan to spend the rest of the day reading blogs and sleeping.

Welcome to Neutrals Week, everyone! I'm happy to say we've got some newcomers this challenge, as well as some returning participants from past challenges. This week is starting out with everyone's favorite comfort zone - black! Black is the neutral we all pull to feel slim, chic, and badass. I got this sweater awhile after I thrifted my poncho. I loved them both because of the chevron-y piping. This sweater suffers a bit from the 90s shorty-shirt phenomenon, but that ups it's layering potential in my opinion. As my hair grows out, it's getting easier to pull off lighter colors. With shorter hair, light colors can make me a bit washed out.

These jeans - Oh the bane of my existence. The perfect fit, but getting the hem right has been insane. They started out too long, and when I went to originally hem them - they had technically already been hemmed by someone else! Once I took out both the original hem and the DIY one from the previous owner, I took these up quite far. I originally had them hemmed for flats, but decided they looked weird and let them back out 1.5 in. I'll have to wear them with my higher heels, but I think they look best that way anyhow.

As a heads up, my blogroll/reader seems a bit screwy on updating so if I miss anyone's posts I'll try to catch up. Also I'm a bit under the weather so it may take some time. I've got a scheduled post for this weekend, and will be back fresh on Monday for the start of Neutrals Week!

I've been having issues since starting this ban. I have a bunch of stuff I still haven't worn since it turned cold - so the logical solution is to remix old favorites and just stop fretting! I added the 100% underskirt because it was a bit nippy. I felt super kicky in this swingy dress.

If you've been following my blog for any length of time, you'd probably be able to pick out my two favorite decades: the 20s and 60s. I love pulling heavily on flapper influences during the winter, but infusing modern details like badass boots, funky belts and unique details.

I'll definitely be pulling out some new pieces next week because it's Neutrals Week! And seriously, if you haven't joined - why not?! What's easier than remixing your neutral pieces in all new ways. Pinterest is full of so much inspiration. From food to style to interior design, I'm constantly pinning new things. This look was inspired by a pin of a girl who had layered a fur vest over a moto jacket. I don't know how well this translated, but I was toasty warm as I had lunch with my in-laws. See that satisfied smile? That's banana-pudding tummy. One thing I'll miss if I ever move from the South is the food.

These boots haven't seen the light of day since February 23, 2011. I was initially in love with them for their small calf circumference, rocker details, and low heel. And a year later, the love affair has waned. Their color makes me struggle - it can't decide if it's grey or a weird taupe-brown. The ankle isn't flattering, and the lack of full zipper inspires so much rage. I think they're up on the chopping block.

As much as I am enamored with this sweater - holybeezuz it's itchy when I first put it on. Normally wool doesn't bother me too badly, but today I decided it was cold enough to deal with an undershirt to combat the itch. I'm still head over heels for these Alice and Olivia boots. I love the little snubbed toes and the added inches I get when I wear them. They actually work perfectly under my (current) favorite pair of jeans.

I tried on about 120 pairs of jeans (for real) over about 4 trips to Goodwill. I finally found these button fly, boot cut, dark wash jeans. I've been wearing these mostly on weekends, but they happily came out into the week today.

Brr! It has gotten cold. Okay it may only be in the 40s, which might be a warm winter for you, but it's wet and grey. So I pumped my day up with lots of bright red and warm wool. This vintage dress has definitely been one of my favorites. I've been meaning to pull these boots out again. They are pretty much glove-leather soft. The wedge+platform gives a fun boost without hurting the feet. Everytime I wear these, I remember why they were such a great buy (plus I got them for like 65% off).

As you may know, I gave out a bunch of my buttonflowers to bloggers around the 'sphere. You can catch my early corsage design on Sheila over here, and one of the classic button flowers on Heather over here. Of course, a big thank you shoutout goes to Ally for supplying most of the ties that have gone into the production. She has graciously sent me another package of ties! Soon they'll be transformed into something new!

Shopping Ban Update: 11/27/11

So it's been a little over a week before starting my shopping ban. (Check my side bar under the Ban tag for more information about my shopping ban). I have to say it hasn't been hard, but it's partly because of the holiday season. I'll admit I did cave and bought this cuff from icing - it ran me all of $2 because of Black Friday sales. I also paid with pocket change - literally.

Quitting shopping cold turkey is never effective, so I let the small purchase slide. I have instead immersed myself in projects, spending times with friends and family.

My best suggestions - don't window shop! Stop those e-letters advertising the latest sales. Stay off the sites about trends. Instead try checking out these time wasters* if you really need something to do on the computer:

Haaaappy Black Friday! Hope everyone had a super excellent day, whether you were US centric or not. Mom, hubs and I ate an excellent lunch and saw the movie Hugo yesterday. The movie was excellent. Very pretty, good storyline, and so unnecessary for 3D gimmicks. (I saw the 2D)

Today was a day all about friends though. I met my bestie at the local mall. They've finally moved another arcade back in that has not only Dance Dance Revolution, but the even rarer Pump It Up machine. We noshed at Panera and followed it up with a couple of hours being mall rats again.We tramped through the odd trade store, tried on loads of rings and vastly unnecessary masquerade masks. We hit up Icing where I feel in love all over snake jewelry, and M tried on wildly innappropriate and wonderfully hilarious rings (pictured above!)

We got home later than planned, but the day was more fun than I've had in a really long time. I also had a pressie waiting in my mailbox! Darling Sheila sent me an awesome DIY project book all about altering thrifted/old pieces into cool new designs. It's also given me some great tie ideas, even though the specific ideas weren't listed. So I imagine these projects will keep me inspired for a long time. So a special shout-out of thanks!

Sheila had no idea how much I'd love this skirt when she picked it up for me. It's one of my top three favorite skirts. (The other two being my All Saints ones) It's finally cold today and I knew I'd want warm layers. I knew I wanted to wear my favorite sweater today too, so how perfect does it go with my yellow skirt!

I tossed on my fur vest because my Mom needed me to hit the store last minute for sodas and fresh sage (Seriously, Mom?! I went shopping a week ago!).. But it was quite crazy already, but we managed to get in and out pretty quickly. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's delicious meal and movie. We're going to see Hugo.

I had to give these things I made a trial run. The flower and wrist cuff were made out of my newest thrifted ties. This particular one was in some of my favorite colors: Mint and Chocolate. If anyone is interested in any of the buttonflowers, feel free to email me. I'm hoping to take them to a craft fair in the spring, but I'm also considering offering them through the blog if there's any interest.

It's still a bit balmy in the afternoons, but the rain is cold and damp. So I pulled out this thin cashmere sweater. I have loved seeing people pop black and white green, but hadn't done it much myself. Plus these plaid pants have gone too long without a wear.

Lots of good news coming up for me and you! For starters, Keely and I got down to business last night and have planned out the next Fashion Challenge. The news goes live on Black Friday! The Challenge will be set for early December.

In other news, I finally started writing last night. I'm a bit late for NanoWrimo, but I still plan on continuing on with writing. School work is winding to a close, now it's about tests and turning those written papers in. So I finally have time to craft, write, draw! Very exciting.

Getting dressed was hard today. I tried pulling all sorts of outfits, and decided to just throw on some All Saints and be done. This dress is more like a tunic at this point, but I still love how comfortable it is. It's rainy, so you get to see my double pumpkins leftover from Halloween. They've held up surprisingly well.

The leggings were one of my last purchases before both the ban and All Saints reclosing their archive site. I decided to snag this pair at $12. This fit is better than most leggings, but still not my favorite. I like them as a tights replacement though.

I'm going to my last class before Thanksgiving break. I'm so ready for a few days of delicious food, family and fun. Hope your Monday is going well!

Sew Sunday: Buttons Part 3

I ordered some buttons pre-ban because I still had a significant amount of Ally's tie pieces left. I wasn't anticipating spending all day long crafting, but I got a little overwhelmed by it. I made 28 button flowers, 8 wrist cuffs and still have (a little bit of) stuff leftover! Click any image to embiggen!

I originally created some wrist cuffs that I sent out as gifts. The prototypes used a piece of elastic and a 'scrunchie' band with an attached button flower. I liked them, but wanted something more streamlined. These use a Velcro closure. I'm still not 100% on the construction aspect, but I do like these a lot more.I'm still not the best seamstress in the world, and I want to create something that's cleanly finished and the Velcro, while not visible when worn, still isn't quite there.

I also realized I never showed off my second design for the flowers! Well over half of the above are made in the geometric design. It works a heck of a lot better for the smaller sized flowers. My Mom got the first two of this type because she also donated some of her old ties from when she worked in a restaurant.

My biggest issue now is deciding what to do with these!

Firstly, I want to say how much I adore this outfit. Secondly - omg tightscrawl. I will also admit to swapping into jeans in the afternoon... because bajeezauz it is cold!

I thrifted this marl sweater fairly recently, Super Saturday if I remember. It was slung up on a rack without a hanger, not in the sweater area either. I saw it! Elbow Patches! I snatched it up not bothering to look at size or anything until in the dressing room. Lo' and behold, it fit! It's got some wool fiber, so I waited to pull it out until it really got down in temps.

This outfit inspires me to share with you guys: Upcoming Buttonflowers! I ordered some buttons so I can finish off the generosity of Ally's ties, and maybe take some spare change to thrift some new ones.

Well it was grey and rainy, and we've come out the other side with something resembling autumn. Which also means, I get to dig into clothes that haven't been worn. Starting with this lush cardigan. I actually wore almost this exact outfit last year.

My old green shirt dress was replaced with this thrifted one, I added tall socks for extra warmth, but otherwise almost identical. I only got to wear this wooly cardigan twice before it warmed up too much. Also these Miz Mooz boots haven't really made it back into rotation for this season, so I happily pulled them out.

Mom and I sat down to make our Turkey Day menu, and she's requested I make pumpkin muffins in lieu of pumpkin pie. So here's a quick tip if you need a speedy dessert to bring over to someone's house or just to jazz up your own menu: Mix together one (15 oz) can of pureed pumpkin, a dash of all spice and a box of yellow cake mix. Put into muffin liners, sprinkle just a dusting of oats onto the tops before sticking into the oven (Follow the cupcake timing and temps on the box). No eggs, oil or milk.

Banned: Shop No More

Alright. Here is goes. For real this time, starting today, I begin another shopping ban. I have a fully loaded closet with at least 40% never before worn stuff (Yes, I'll admit to stock piling). An arsenal of well edited shoes that make me and my feet feel fabulous. Christmas is only a handful of days away, usually bringing more clothes, giftcards and is swiftly followed by my birthday. My goals for this ban:

To remix my closet to the best of my ability. Trying out new combinations and permutations. And remind myself why I loved the pieces I bought in the first place.
To save money that I would otherwise spend on shopping that is not always necessary, frequently emotional, and hopefully have the funds available to move.
Relearn self control. I went from a person who agonized over buying a $10 dress or $4 pair of thrifted pants, but can now drop money on a new pair of shoes without blinking.
To indulge in crafting with materials I already have acquired or acquire at thrifty prices.

It will be hard going cold turkey, but like I said, I have a good store of things squirreled away and great gifts from friends that have yet to be worn. It'll be like going shopping every time I open my closet. I will also be utilizing my blog to its best advantages. I will be crafting. I will be hosting Fashion Challenges, which everyone is welcome to join in on.

I'll definitely be taking notes from this post by Sal of Already Pretty who is also in a similar shopping slow down. I don't have time defined limit on this ban, but I'm also hoping that as the winter season comes to a close, I will assess my winter-wear, remove worn out pieces and happily reunite with my summer storage.

This is my black sweatshirt maxi dress. I still can't believe I bought it, but who can pass up a dress that is cozy, feels like pajamas, and has sleeves for $4? Not this lady. I'm still not ruling out shortening it, but I actually enjoyed wearing this maybe-vintage dress. I'm actually going to estimate this dress is from the 90s, but the generic tag/brand seems a dead end. D said it's invokes a "Nun/holy" look, but I think it's because of the flared hem. I decided to play up the large swath of black fabric with a heavy chain, this big belt and my mom's cherub bracelet.

I normally don't take too many detail shots, but this outfit was really all in the details, so here's: Bracelet, make up and chains, shape of the dress. You can even see my tall argyle socks in the OOTD photo!

It was perfect for a day of lazing around with kitties, watching Being Human, and enjoying the warm rainy day. Mom made bourbon peppercorn chicken with broccoli and rice for dinner yesterday. I'm in love with this jacket! It's just so comfortable! I decided to take a page out of Audi's book and pair it with my custom harness. I paired mine underneath the jacket this time, but I plan to wear it over it sometime. A bit difficult to see but the top and the jacket have small stripes.

I needed something comfortable, but I just realized I've worn 5 jeans-based outfits in a row, plus a bunch of pants-based. The weather is was nice! (It's windy and rainy now, but still) I need to pull out a skirt or a dress tomorrow. I will remedy this. ^_~

Thanks to everyone who shared their Thanksgiving plans with me yesterday. I will be spending today henna-ing my and my mom's hair and planning our Thanksgiving dinner. Then next week we'll be spending Turkey Day cooking and eating, and probably going to see the movie Hugo. D's parents will be out of town so we'll also be enjoying some R&R before the final weeks of school.

This is the second thrifted jacket from this weekend. I wasn't planning to wear it today, but I couldn't help it. I saw this peeking out of the long sleeved shirt rack, the brilliant orange-red catching my eye. I picked it up. It's a gorgeous heavy weight linen. It reminds me a bit of the type of candy corn tipped in black/brown. D calls it my Flame jacket because it reminds him of fire. I wanted to wear it with my yellow skirt, but I was vetoed. I stuck with some jeans and heels.

I've got class tonight, and I'm feeling a bit run down. I'm ready for Thanksgiving break. If you are US-centric, what are your holiday plans?

Every once in a while, I like to share my dressed down looks. I try to make a conscious effort during the week to dress up, but I still put care into my casual looks. The tee here was a purchase from Super Saturday. I loved the abstract design, and the red is actually embroidered on. This is actually close to how I dressed in high school, only a little more "me". I wore this to go... thrifting! I knoowww, but I had this niggling feeling that I needed to go to Goodwill.

This is why! I found two incredible jackets, which I am increasingly obsessed with thanks to Debbi of SheAccessorizesWell. Seriously, the only thing cooler than her accessory collection is her beautiful jacket and coat collection. I've been looking for a comfy canvas jacket since summer. It came along in the form of this H&M jacket. The weird thing is, we don't have an H&M near me. But some lovely soul who is near to my size keeps donating great pieces. I'm happy to snap them up. The other jacket will hopefully make it's debut soon.

I also found two dresses. One of which I might wear this week, the other will be my birthday dress for this year. A little confession: Having a January birthday sucked for much of my life. It usually snows, my birthday falls on a holiday (MLK Day), or people are generally busy. It's hard to celebrate winter birthdays, harder still in January, but I've decided to make it a little tradition of finding a special dress for my birthday to sweeten the day. Different shape for today. I thrifted this wooly knit cape? poncho? awhile back. It has limited application, but I have plans for transformative use! (I plan to wear it as a dress and/or a skirt!) I also decided to throw on all sorts of bracelets because there are limited types of accessories that work with capes/ponchos. My hands stuck out so my arm party was visible all day.

Today I'm also link up about make-up via Oranges and Apples. I rarely wear any make-up.Most days are met with a bare-face, no hair product, only a little bit of moisturizer. My skin stays relatively clear if I leave it alone. On rare occasions, I dash on minimal eyeliner or a tinted lip balm. My favorite being Burt's Bees Tigerlily or Plum. No foundation, nothing. I respect people who opt to wear make-up, but my skin can't take it.

Angsty emo pose today because I wanted to show off my new 'do! It's sort of Victoria Beckham bob meets Zooey Deschanel bangs. I've been trying to grow the front out but it grow so slowww. I also had her cut the bangs so when they got long again I could start growing them out if I want. I'm really happy with this cut, and I almost want to keep it. I'm gonna see how it grows out first, but this is so low maintenance.

The outfit was purely inspired by Sheila. Her bold style (and style suggestions) inspire me to no end. The red ribbons came standard in these boots. Intimidated, I swapped 'em for black ones. I slipped them back in today to wear with my red pants and this uber soft sweater. The sweater was one of those "but it's SOFT" thrifts. I am glad I paid full $5.99 for it because someone else would have snagged it - I meant just look at those adorable buttons. It's a bit fluffy, but that's just the snuggly angora waving hello. Hello, Angora!

Ham and Cheddar Pinwheel and Autumn-Style Potato Soup (Swap in a sweet potato for one or more of your potatoes, add savory herbs, bacon, and my secret: half a pureed zucchini and handful of pureed cauliflower). You know you want it.

So I went for a hair cut. It's been about 2 1/2 months since my last one and I was getting frustrated by the back of it that was growing about a half an inch every week while the front stayed pretty much where it was. Admittedly, I got a GREAT cut from a super awesome hairstylist (Mastercuts, I never get anyone's name because they don't take appointments, and my cuts are random done). I feel bad because I tend to babble about my hair when getting a cut. I hope it's not annoying, but since I have started doing, I always get the cut I want. Edited to add: Pics of new 'do won't be until tomorrow.

Today's outfit was pre-cut. I've been meaning to wear these two pieces together. I bought both pieces because I felt they created some wardrobe continuity. I had never intended to really put them together, but I actually really love this. I'm also usually not one to wear everything from one store to avoid looking like a walking advertisement.. but throw caution to the wind, break silly self-imposed rules!

Woo hoo, colorful tights! I have been dying to break these out. And after my thrifting trip this weekend, I managed to pull together the perfect outfit for them. I've been wanting to buy these tights for longer than I care to admit, and finally broke over. Wild tights are something I've had trouble jumping on board with. Why? because they don't usually come in cotton or wool. I hate hate hate nylon with a passion. It snags and makes my legs feel incredibly itchy. These tights are a nice blend of cotton and nylon though. They're lightweight, but comfy and durable.

Also, I totally played Dance Dance Revolution in this outfit. Win!

So I had a pretty good weekend. Mom and I celebrated her birthday early since we didn't want to fight the holiday crowds that are already picking up. We had a great lunch, but before that, I ran into Goodwill for their monthly Super Saturday Sale (50% off everything). I still really needed more shirts so I stayed only in the racks with tops. I managed to leave with 4 tee shirts, 2 sweaters, 1 three-quarter sleeve knit shirt, a pair of pants (above), and a tee for my mom. Oh and two stud-like bracelets. Weekend sales always excite me, because I love good deals.

Also I wanted to share my lunch with you guys today because it was that good. Last night I made some salmon for dinner, and this afternoon I was craving the Panera Salmon Club from 2010 that they don't have any more. So I took some of last night's cold salmon, cooked one piece of bacon, realized I didn't have lettuce or tomatoes so I sliced some onion and yellow pepper and panfried them in bacon fat. Drained everything on paper towels. Mix a little bit of mayo with fresh garlic and either tomato paste or cocktail sauce depending on the contents of your fridge to make a pseudo-tomato aioli. Combine on a piece of oatmeal bread and eat.

Even though I was just cooking for me, I still took some time to make myself something tasty that didn't come from a drive-thru. What have you done to spoil yourself lately?

Shoe Sunday: One In, One Out

Since I have limited space for shoe (and clothing) storage I try to keep a one-in, one-out policy. And since I have had some pretty good success at selling on ebay, I thought I'd sell a couple pairs that aren't getting enough love and find some replacements.

First up the Miz Mooz October Boot. One of the most common search words that bring people to my blog. I love the concept of these boots, but unlike most Miz Mooz boots these ran true to size. (Most Miz Mooz shoes in my experience run at least 1/2 size large). I wasn't too broken up over selling these because I finally put a name to these boots.

Popping up all over pinterest when I first joined, triple lace up boots were a dream of a dream. I finally found out who the designer was (Ann Demeulemeester, for the interested), and jokingly ebayed the name to see what was on ebay. Granted mine are NOT the designer version, but an All Saints remake of the boots. I'm actually more drawn to this version because it doesn't have the talon shaped heel of the Demeulemeester pair. I got them for a fair price, and am happy to say they're quite comfy. (Possibly due to the uber awesome gel sole the previous owner left in, but also because the leather is very soft)

Next up, my beloved yellow Fluevog boots. I hurt to sell these, but I just couldn't get them to vibe in my closet. Thankfully they sold to a yellow-shoe loving Fluevogger in Canada. I'm happy to know they are off to a very happy home.

And I was able to fill a much needed gap with THE MADISON BOOTS! A lovely blogger was selling her's on ebay, and was super awesome enough to offer me up a BIN price, even though I had someone bidding against me. We settled on a fair deal and they are mine!

My Sweater Dress post was one of my most viewed posts pre-Fashion Challenge. And probably for good reason! I loved that dress to bits, and so did Keely, who got it in a swap. Sweater dresses can be a bit of a challenge to style sometimes, especially if you're particular curvy. I hadn't found the right sweater dress until a couple of weeks ago when I picked this up in goodwill. I actually paid full goodwill price (of $7.49) for it. I loved the waffle texture and the deep V-neckline that will be aces for layering up. Of course I had to mix it with purple and black to bring in the inspiration from my old post. The star belt is semi-new, but I haven't found the right outfit for it until now.

I really love seeing how my style has evolved over the past two years. I think I've learned a lot about who I am in terms of style, what pieces are worth investing in, what fits my body type, and to always always try things on when you can! My followers have now surpassed the 100 mark (of course that's just those who sub through google), and I want to thank you for all the support. Thanks to everyone who follows Megan Mae Daily!

Happy All Saints Day! Lots of reasons to celebrate this week. And what's an All Saints Day without a little All Saints? I still love these dresses I picked up over the summer. Although they are shrinking towards tunic length, that just leaves me with layering possibilities. The weather is briefly within comfortable levels. I'll be getting in as many shorter sleeved and non-tights looks before it really hits winter time.

Wow! Fall Favorite day already. My outfit may be more "winter" favorite because it is cold. My favs today are my fur vest and OTK boots. This vest used to be a coat. I thrifted it for $10 and decided to remake it into something a little more wearable becauseI have a jacket that I grab more often that's more fitted. So some time with scissors and the sewing machine, I fitted down the coat into a furry vest. (The excess fur has been kindly donated to my mom's outside stray-kitties' igloo for winter warmth)

My "pajama" boots made a fun contrast to the silky rabbit fur. They're going to be a go-to for the coldest days this winter. Also since Keely is wearing the tunic she bought from me today, I decided to belt the vest with the belt she gifted to me!

Fall Trends: Brights

While this outfit would have been perfect for yesterday's stripes, it was the only thing I could realllly work out to wear for Brights Day. I almost didn't wear this either, because it was 40 degrees this morning! Brr. I decided to suck it up and give these cotton lined wool tights a try. I spent two years trying to convince myself they'd make a difference for wearing skirts in cold weather, and actually they work pretty well. I still need to see how they wash first, but initially they seem like a good investment.

I think my fringe is getting too long to wear straight down. I need to decide if I want them short or if I want to try and grow them out. Any thoughts? I'm probably going for a trim in November.

Also I had to do my volunteer work today, which meant I'd be on my feet for a minimum of three hours in a hot kitchen. So I picked my 99p ebay boots which have incredible traction.Striped shirt and jeans, boring? I jazzed it up with my big chains looped around. They did come off before cooking, but I liked the look ultimately.

Happy Midi/Maxi Day, Everyone! I am not a maxi-fan in my own personal style, though I think they look fab on many people. They often overwhelm my petite figure, so I went for some layered skirts to create a midi look. We're going to play another guessing game, because I really do love these - Where do you think this dress is from? It totally has elements of the awesome All Saints, but I was floored to stumble across it on ebay by another brand.

The shoes are newly thrifted. These puppies set me back a whole $2 (For those who don't know, I thrift shoes and wear them those last few wears.. I tend to feel bad for the ones that are pre-loved). These had a heel shape similar to Fluevog Summertimes family. I've been wanting a pair, and stalking via ebay, but so far none have shown up in the right size. I was ** <- that close to a pair of Haights until the seller said they were a 7.5 and the 7s fit them. Ah, well. The thrifting gods smiled on me and these sandals popped up. Think I can get away with wearing tights with them?

Happy Men's Wear/Oversized Pant Day! I stuck with the menswear look because my Mom gave me this leather tie awhile back. I looove the piano design. I knew I'd have to wear it with my All Saints skirt. Now speaking of the skirt... I removed the underskirt.

Wait! Before you throw things, I removed it because the skirt was just so darn over the top, I felt like it's everyday wearableness was reduced. And for my tiny wardrobe that just doesn't work. So I snipped all that excess fabric off. I'll probably use it for some project or other, but for now, I have a wearable skirt. Also, it made the skirt about two inches shorter, which doesn't overwhelm my figure as much. Oh and in case you were interested, this skirt is back up for sale on the All Saints Archive site.

In Search Of

I have been on a Search.

Lately, it's been an obsession to find the right black platform ankle boot. I used to have these, which were a gift. They weren't perfect, and they hit the donation pile about 4 times. But the reason they were pulled out is because they filled a niche in my closet that I've been unable to really fill since wearing them out. Tall stomping boots with a badass edge.

Lately, my biggest love has been these old Alice + Olivia with Payless collab boots from a couple years ago. It breaks me up because I know the likelihood of me finding a pair is next to nil. The drool worthy, but $370, Fluevog Silverlakes are a big favorite as well. I've seen these pop up on ebay, but never much less than retail. Jeffery Campbell's illustrious Clinic boots weigh in at a slightly cheaper $180, still more than I'm looking for. I'm kicking myself for not being as smart of a shopper a couple of years ago, because I remember when the Alice + Olivia boots came out.

Brr! Last night we had our first freeze. I knew I'd need a warm cozy outfit for today. I got this cotton sweater off etsy sometime during the summer. Autumn has Fallen

So it dropped 30 degrees in the span of about 36 hours. It was hitting the 80s earlier this week and today is in the 50s. Brr! I actually needed a jacket on top of the cardigan.

The cardigan is one of the hoarded winter/fall gear pieces that have languished away in my winter drawer waiting for the temps to drop (maybe not quite so far...) but I'm happy to finally be able to start pulling these things out. And hooray! These boots. I've been waiting too long to really wear them. I'm happy to say they're wonderfully cozy against the cold weather, and best damn 4 inch heel I've ever worn.

I'm heading over to my mom's for the day. So I may not be able to post tomorrow, but I'll still try to catch up on my blogroll via phone if possible.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice and suggestions on volunteering. I finally found a place after asking around. This outfit was sort of a poor choice for today's weather. It was pooouring when we took today's photos, and now it's bright and sunny (but cool). Tomorrow's temps are expecting to be in the 50s though, so I wanted to squeak this outfit in before I was in boots for the next 5 months.

This blouse? Tunic? was thrifted a few weeks ago. The psychedelic colors were really cool, but also - it was 100% silk. For $2. Not much else to say other than this was a fun outfit, I wish I had a reason to be so dressed up.

I usually try hard to keep positivity here, but to be honest, I'm having a really rough morning. It's also fall break, which is just making this harder. The biggest thing going on is that I have to do 3 hours of volunteer work for one of my classes, which is no big deal, right? I mean, I live in the Volunteer State! Wrong! I've been turned down by no less than 7 places so far. Places are either booked up, require a hiring process for "full time" type volunteers or require background checks (not a problem, except I'm now running out of time because our papers based on work is due next Monday, and those checks take time). So I'm feeling a bit disheartened, especially since I volunteered all throughout my teens, and still give lots of my time to different people and places.

On a much more positive note - this shirt! I've been planning a bleach-dye project for awhile, and this shirt came along via my Mom. I got a wild hair this weekend and bleached it. The jeans are newly thrifted. Here's the question for the day - ~~do you want the Sew Sunday how-to today or this weekend?~~ It's up here.

Sew Sunday: Bleach Out

So my mom is all the time passing on clothing to me, gifted, thrifted or otherwise. Some of it gets re-gifted, some worn once or twice, and others - they become heavy staples in my closet. My mom is an excellent shopper. But sometimes I can just see the greater potential of something. I think that's where my creativity spawns from. So when she gave me this off-color charcoal top, I knew I had finally gotten the garment that would be subjected to my current obsession - Bleach dyeing.

First things first, Supply list:
Garment to be bleached. Stick with a dark color for best results
Bleach!
Water!
Hydrogen peroxide!
Gloves!!!
A well-ventilated spot (Probably not your bathroom, unless you have some large windows you can open)

To start, decide how you want to create your pattern. I wanted to do a spray/gradient design, but if you know how to tie-dye, then feel free to get extra creative with it.

I used a regular old spray bottle full of bleach. Most tutorials will highly suggest to dilute your bleach to a 50/50 reduction. Instead, I lazily dampened and rung out my shirt really well. I already had bleach in a bottle. I then laid out the shirt in the base of my tub. You may want to do this outside though. It was late when I did this and didn't want to disturb my neighbors.

I sprayed the bottom hemlines very liberally, front and back. I wound out wringing things out a couple of times, and respraying. Don't be lazy like me, you'll probably get better results.

After awhile, I wound up with a red(?!) gradient. I decided last minute to spray around the collar, but since it was drier, it bleached very fast.

Finally I dumped the shirt into a sink with about a 40/60 mixture of peroxide/water. It will fizz! You don't really need a ton, but this will stop the bleach from burning the fabric. Then rinse really good. Finally toss it into the washer with some old towels you don't mind getting dirty (or by itself, if you aren't behind on laundry like I am). Wash and dry like normal. Done!

Color results not accurate, but it does show the pattern nicely!

Woo! I think this is my final piece of my last All Saints haul. This long sleeved tunic dress is something I've been hunting ever since the introduction to tank dresses. I really wanted some sleeved layering dresses. This little ditty popped up on the All Saints archive site for I think ~$25. Which was less than many other tee shirt dresses or at least comparable in price, not to mention it was in an endlessly useful grey. I had planned to cut off that weird fabric belt thing, and I'm still waffling about that. It does give the outfit visual interest if I want to wear the tunic alone, but eeeeh, I dunno. Thoughts?

I did have on a skirt layered over this but changed into jeans. I hate to wear jeans three times in a week, but Friday evening class calls for jeans and flat shoes (Wellness).

Well fall is definitely here to stay. The leaves are falling, and the wind is blowing! This is the only photo out of 8 or 9 that wasn't completely windblown. I'm wearing my black top and denim today in honor of Team WendyB! Go check me and other Wendy Teammates out over at her blog.

I thrifted this top. I've been wanting one of those embroidered dresses like this, but they aren't really my style and I never really came across the right one. I found this top while looking for sleeved shirts. I liked that it was black, the florals were slightly more abstract that most patterns usually are, and I loved the lace up front. I think it works for me. I've actually worn this a bunch during these last few days of warmish weather, but this is its first day on the blog.

Yayayay! Okay, so like I said on my Massive Shoe Sunday, I got a pair of Frye flats in addition to the boots. These only cost me a mere $20. I was expecting a pair of used shoes, but these babies are NEW. The soles were not even scratched. So unless someone wore them only inside, there's no damage on them. I originally saw these in black, but not in my size, and knew I'd get them if they ever popped up in my size. I grabbed them so fast when I saw how little the BIN was. I wish I knew the style name because now that I have these, I want them even more in black. They're my dream flats. Lots of straps and buckles and over the top gorgeousness. Can I mention they're also in that deliciously thick tough Frye Leather? Yes!

So delish!

Woo! I felt creative today. I thrifted this poor tank over the summer and wore it pretty much solely on weekends. It really didn't feel like my style, but it had some odd staining on one of the straps (you can kind of see it, it's blue), and it reminded me of ice cream. I kind of carried it around for awhile before finally accepting that it couldn't go back on the rack.

The green fishnets were an impulse purchase thinking I've have tons of outfits to pair them with. Unfortunately the odd shade of green didn't complement many of my dresses, so it got a visit to Mr.Scissors. I think they added a nice contrast to this sweet top. I was kindof down about these boots when I first got them, but I'm not sure how I didn't buy them sooner. The heel/platform height is delish, and they are so comfortable now. Expect the unexpected I guess!

Speaking of guessing, I was wondering the other day - How tall do you think I am? It's easy to find out (just check my swaps page), but I wonder about the height impression I make on my readers. Do I read as tall, petite or average height?

Happy Thanksgiving to my friends in the North! Hope you all are enjoying your holiday.

I've felt sort of frustrated with my closet. I know I've got some GREAT pieces, but sometimes I'll get in a rut and feel like I can't put pieces together into an outfit that *works*. So I gave myself a freebie today and decided even if I wasn't going to wear it all day, I'd sit down and try on a bunch of outfits until I found one I liked visually and then go from there. The skirt was the starting point. A gift from the lovely Sheila, it is a very strange weaved fabric (50% wool/50% rayon).. but it falls wonderfully and is the perfect shade of yellow.

Next I pulled out this All Saints top (that caused Wendy B to shop!). Now these two pieces I wouldn't typically pair on a Monday for a very specific reason: I have a 3 hour class to sit through. I don't know about you, but I hate having two snug-fitting clothing items on while sitting for hours on end. Adding the chain belt didn't help. But overall I liked the concept, I felt good flouncing around in this for a couple of hours before changing into the outfit linked above with my pleather jacket for added warmth.

Massive Shoe Sunday

I thought I'd wrangle up all the shoes I've picked up lately, and share about them:

Wanted Ankle Boots (red and black) - Decided to try my luck on a 99p ebay auction. No one else bid up against me so I won these puppies at a steal of a price. I was even more surprised at the quality when it showed up. Sometimes things can be happy accidents.

BOC Born Flats - If you've visited my blog for anything length of time, you know I love a colorful shoe. These little blue beauties were my first foray into a new brand. Happily, I sized down since they were flats, a little disappointed in the sharp edges of the leather, but the design has a padded place at the heel, so it minimizes discomfort. These will be tucked away for spring.

Clarks by Indigo flats - Green flats! These were probably the biggest bust of my shopping adventures lately. I wish I had also thought well enough to size down, instead going with my typical 6.5. These are really too big on their own. Okay with socks though.

JUMP metallic booties - Oh these! I've been in love with them forever. I finally got the nerve up to get 'em. They run a bit short in the toe box, but I happily DIY'd a stretch of it and now they fit alright.Never would have laid down the retail price, but I was thrilled to score them new off ebay.

FRYE Tall boots and flats (not pictured) - As I've said before, I sold off my beloved Frye Harness boots and my Fluevog Paris pumps to fund a little shoe-closet revival. I also donated lots of thrifted shoes and worn out pairs to make room for the new influx. I first found the tall boots and just *knew* they'd be the perfect replacement to my distressed ankle boots. The fit is amazing on these, and they are more broken in. I wore the 4 inch heels all over yesterday with no ill effects to my feet. The 8R's while lovely were not for me, selling them just allowed me to make room for these!

I also nabbed a pair of Frye flats that I've been hunting in particular for the past year or so. I originally found 'em in black on ebay in a size 7. I passed on them then knowing they'd be huge on me. So when they popped up nearly new looking, in cognac, in a size 6... I bought 'em. They haven't arrived yet, but I know they'll be perfect. They're the style of flat with many many buckles. I wish I could remember the name and link to 'em. They'll probably be tucked away for spring, but if the weather holds, I'll at least give them a spin.

Ohhh Friday. I'm beginning to sort of dread Fridays. For most people, it's the last day of the week, the start of the weekend. For me, it's a full day of classes, work work work, and never enough time to cook, eat, blog, until well after 10/11pm. I left class a bit early to go meditate outside in the bright warm sunshine, and I feel energized. I've tried to do that while the weather is so warm and nice.

I was channeling Keely today. As you may know, Fashion Challenge link-up starts first thing Monday morning, so I guess her style was on my mind. This tunic came from her. I picked up these skinny jeans for $1.94... retail tags still attached ($158!).. I adore the comfortable fit, the shorter than average legs (for my petite frame, means less bunching fabric), and the greenish grey color. Weird because I keep feeling over skinnies, but I've thrifted two pairs recently. Maybe in preparation for boot-tucking?

I actually paid $2 for the flats too, and I think the jeans were actually the better investment because the mules will be hitting the trash. Wildly uncomfortable, and the sole is coming apart after one wear. Pity because they were adorable.
