Soul Food

 Hat, Bracelet - Target
Shirt - Gap
Skirt - H&M, thrifted
Ride Boots - Cydwoq

A sort of super hero look today, but how could I not feel like a super hero in these boots. So shiny and soft and comfy. I pretty much took the whole weekend to be a couch potato. Even my food was made in the laziest way possible (recipe below). Even though I'm still technically on break, I'm getting back to work today.

Pencil skirts are not my shape of choice. I like them visually, but often they can feel confining. However I've been looking to plug the red-skirt hole in my closet for a long long time and this pencil skirt has a nice wide waist band and it's lined. People add H&M to the fast-fashion list, but I'm often surprised by the quality of their goods compared to other FF retailers. However all my H&M goodies are thrifted, so I don't know about the scope of actual stores.

It's a good thing I'm a decent cook, otherwise I'd be a very hungry person.

Put these in a crockpot on high:
can of fireroasted tomatoes
small can of tomato sauce
chopped pork (or chicken or beef)

3+ hours later:
add a box of Zatarains hoppin' john (or your own rice/beans and seasonings)
water as needed
frozen corn

After about an hour, it'll look something like this - Eat! I promise it's quite delicious. It would be good with another veg side (acorn squash!) or add in something like green peas.

Are you experiencing colder weather yet? What are some of your favorite fall recipes?

  1. I like baking in the fall, but I don't usually have a lot of time to do it.

  2. I love your hat! That was the first thing I noticed, it is too cute. And I love the skirt you found, I haven't been lucky enough to thrift too much H&M but I know it's pretty decent stuff.

The recipe sounds delicious. We've been experiencing cooler weather. My favorite fall recipes are shepherd's pie, chili or spaghetti and meatballs.

  3. I love your red hat and skirt! I need to get on the crock-pot cooking thing! I make a ton of soups in the fall/winter but always forget about my crock-pot and do it the hard way!

    1. Crockpots make things so easy. They're magical machines!

  4. You seriously have the most amazing boot collection. And I agree with your previous post - go bold or go home - we only live once, right?

We still have 80-degree weather hear so fall is like a pipe dream. I love soups though - a couple years ago I was on a butternut squash soup thing for the cooler months.

  5. Yum. It is cold here, after a long walk these weekend I filled up on pasta, my comfort food.

The skirt is lovely. I have found that some H&M stuff lasts for ages. The problem is, some of it really doesn't last, and I get sad when people buy armfuls of it every season then just chuck it away. Thrift! Better bargains and better quality, I say. But I am preaching to the converted ;-)

  6. Yay, hat! (Gorgeous boots as well.) I make a heck of a lot of winter squash this time of year. Basically I fling together curries out of it. I wouldn't vouch as to their authenticity, but they hit the spot for me.

H&M is kind of hit-or-miss on the quality; they have some more expensive pieces that hold up pretty well, and those may be what you're finding in the thrifts, but they also have a lot of disposable rubbish, and way too much in the way of acrylic sweaters and fake leather. Their cotton basics and their tights are pretty good, in my experience. I don't really buy much trendy, disposable stuff from them, and my aversion to most man-made fibres limits me as well, but when they're good, they're very good, and a cut above most fast fashion.

    1. I'd love some hints on curry and squash recipes! Even non-authentic.

Those are probably what I'm finding. I barely pay attention to brand tags, but I read fibre content every time. I prefer natural fibers whenever possible.

  7. This is a great look on you Megan. I'm loving the whole haberdashery thing right now which this sort of resembles. Super cute hat which might look smashing with some of your button flowers on it!

That recipe looks good and easy. I think I'll be trying it. I love soups and stews this time of year almost as much as tights and boots.

  8. I like how your hat band(s) relate to your stripey shirt! So cool, Megan! This is a favourite fall recipe and extremely easy - acorn squash stuffed with apples. I modify by using ground cloves and adding a tiny bit of butter:

  9. I'm with Joni!! Soups and stews. And more soups and stews. Maybe some rice and beans too. Your recipe looks so good AND easy. Your look of the day is cool!! I love the hat (and your expression). I almost never wear pencil skirts but I think I'm bored and ready to try some things out of my comfort zone. As soon as it's cool enough to wear boots without sweating to death, I think I'll give those skirts a try. Your look is great-not too fussy or dressy, just right!!

  10. I love this outfit - and you look great in that pencil skirt! I am still looking for the perfect red pencil skirt. The one I have is not cutting the mustard.

I made roasted red pepper and tomato soup yesterday - that's what we're having for dinner!

  11. Very cool retro look. I have seen some nice H&M pieces in my thrifting, even tho' the stuff currently in the store seems, well, not well made.

Very jealous of peeps who can rock hats!

  12. Very cool outfit. Your hat makes you look a little like a pixie to me (in a good and magical way I promise!). I really love your red skirt. I think I've given up on skirts lately, but I envy them on other people.

  13. Awfully cute outfit. And the fact that you're wearing it makes it look better.

  14. We had a similar type supper - brown sausage, then add hot sauce, rice & water. Let sit for 20 minutes, add diced tomatoes and frozen veggies and simmer until warm. So easy, so nummy, so filling! (Also, I read your comment on the comment by Ana and it took me about 10 minutes to figure out that you were talking fabric make up and not nutritional fibre!!)

  16. Gorgeous skirt! I need to be brave ans try mine out again. And those boost are so great!

I've found H&M quality really varies. They have low and high quality goods in the larger stores I've visited.

  18. Oooooh I like your look today Megan! That hat is sensational and the boots are gorgeous! Very superhero-esque. I also find pencil skirts very constricting and don't wear them very often for that fact. Your dinner looks yummy and like something I could actually pull off--if Patrick doesn't freak about the tomatoes. ;-)

  19. Those are fabulous boots! I can't do tall boots because of my wide calves. I even bought a pair of wide-calf boots and they still didn't work. I guess to Catwoman impersonations for me! Your drawing (watercolor?) is super cute! Do they have super cute Superhero comics? If not, you just may have to start one!

It's been a while since I've blogged. You hosting any challenges any time soon?

  21. I can't look at any boots, Meagan Mae. I'm in the early stages of boots anonymous now. I'm sure yours are wonderful by all accounts. I did scan your ensemble from the knees up and I must say you do look heroic and lovely to boot, opps, ahh. And your fall recipe looks delish. I'm about to go downstairs right now and whip something up to satisfy my hunger for...something.

  22. you should wear the hat more often, it is beautiful and it fits you well! your boots look comfy and elegant at the same time, when boots are that kind i like it. my favorite fall cooking is everything with apples and mushrooms and sometimes a pumkin soup.

  23. You look adorable!! I'm going to have to try that recipe--YUM!!

  24. Pencil skirts are key players in my wardrobe. I love how they hug my legs. You'll never see me in an A-line skirt or anything resembling a tutu.

My favorite fall recipes have squash in them: pumpkin, acorn, spaghetti. Yum!

  25. ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE OUTFITS OF YOURS UP TO DATE. I love red as you know. Pencil skirts may be a little constricting but I love and wear them anyway. In today's post I have one of my ultimate favorite pencil skirts (a white one).

Last Fall White House Black Market - one of my most favorite stores - had a very similar red hat. It was a wool hat, in the same exact color and shape as yours with a faux leather, super cute skinny bow around it. I want it so badly but it was either 60 or 70 bucks. If I ever find it on EBay, I will buy it. Also, if you ever think of getting rid of your hat, you can always give it to me. =)
