Oh Tuesday

Earrings - gift
Sweater - swap
Pants - The Limited
Shoes - Fly London, amazon

Well Christmas is officially over. I went Christmas day to see Black Swan with my brother, and finally caught up with the last of my friends for the holiday season yesterday. The shopping was horrid yesterday, so I came home and ordered some stuff online.

Today's picture is less about my outfit, and more about my feelings. I'm alone today. Isolated after so many people over the holidays. It's refreshing as the snow still on the ground. Today's quiet reflection, cleaning an empty house, getting ready for the new year. Today is simply about comfort and rejuvenation.

Not Another Christmas Post!?!

Dress - Made by MIL
Harness - Audra Jean
Tee - Jcrew, thrifted
Boots - Miz Mooz, endless

'Twas the day after Christmas and all through the house
We sat slack-jawed, bored on the couch.

Our packages opened, wallets stuffed tight
Of giftcards and money, of hope and adventure, of growing delight

So we bundled up tight, and got into the car
D hoped we wouldn't go far

But Megan was happy, so there wasn't much fight
The shopping commenced, and it was alright.

Early Week Wrap Up

 Tunic, Tee, Jeans - Swapped
Boots - Miz Mooz, ebay

Christmas is now in full swing for me. Monday was full of friends. My friend, S, took me and Hubs out for dinner and presents. I got a Nook!! I'm crazy excited about it.

Today was spent out shopping. It wasn't intended, but I went along with MIL and wound up shopping all day. The above picture was my outfit for the day. I didn't realize until I was out the door that everything except the boots were from swapping with Keely! Sorry about the lighting. Nighttime indoor pictures, yuck! I'm hoping for a new camera one of these days.

I may be here and gone, off and on all week. Things should settle down later this week once plans begin to stabilize.

Christmas plaid

Dress - Faded Glory
Tee - Kohls
Belt - TJMaxx
Leggings - No boundaries
Boots - Miz Mooz October, ebay

Christmas is a week away! I really wanted to wear a dress today. Layered up with leggings, tall socks, tall boots and a long sleeved tee. I love this plaid dress. It's cotton, it's washable, it's warm in cold weather, cool in warm. I've worn it a number of different ways

I'm actually beginning to get excited for Christmas this year. It feels like it's really snuck up on me. I hope everyone is enjoying the winter holidays.

Doodle Week Round-up

Well my first doodle week was tons of fun. I will definitely be employing doodles again, especially for theme weeks. It makes planning loads easier. I also find myself considering accessories or layering more often. I think this will be extra fun when it's not so freezing.

Doodle Week: Day 5

L/S Tee - swap
Diamond Tee - Etsy
Cords - rummage sale
Pumps - Poetic License, ebay

Final day of Doodle Week! Don't forget my Doodle Giveaway ends tonight at 11:59pm CST. I'll be drawing a winner tonight!

Pants all week.. I felt a bit boring with this. I need to wear a skirt! Thankfully it looks like Monday will actually be above freezing. I love these corduroy pants. I mean, they were $3! But they are way too long for 99% of my shoes. See them eating my purple pumps. Layered up some light shirts because I'm just staying home today.

I'm way exhausted. I spent half the night drawing because I don't often get much time for actual art during the school semester. I'm hoping to get some more time to draw today. And of course, work on the doodle winner's piece. Don't forget to enter!

Doodle Week: Day 4

Wool Cardi - Banana Republic, thrifted
Cami - NY&Co
Black Pants - Gap, thrifted
Boots - Fly London, amazon
Earrings - from Keely

Day 4 brings rain. By now that snow on my porch has melted into icy grossness. So I've bundled up in my grey wool cardi, layered my super soft wooly socks under knee high boots, and am dealing with the static from this red top for now. I ended up awake way too early and am already drooping before noon. Maybe I can get a nap in! Haha!

I didn't realize/remember these pants were thrifted. They had the original tags still on them. These are my "perfect" black pants. You know the ones everybody searches for? I found mine for 99c.

It's 9 days til Christmas! Hubby's sister and her family, brother and his family, and maybe a nephew or two will be coming by this weekend for their annual Dirty Santa game. It's probably the one holiday tradition that I actually enjoy. I don't have any parties or anything to go to this year, but will be doing local family visits to mom, grandparents, etc. Are you going to any holiday parties this season?

Edit @ 10: 37am - I had part of this post pre-written along with the doodle pre-uploaded, and it turns out everyone is thinking about holiday (work) parties today!

Doodle Week: Day 3

Tee - Gap
Cardi - Rugged Warehouse
Jeans - LOFT
Shoes - Vans
I'm done! I'm finished! My last final was last night and I blazed through it. I feel very confident about finishing up this semester. Today is all about relaxing. I'm planning to make some teriyaki pork medallions with steamed rice and maybe some yummy brownies for dessert. I'm then going to read and watch bad tv all day without guilt that I should be doing homework - because I have none!

This week has become a skirt-less week. It's cold. I'm running out of tights: I sent one pair in a swap, found a run on my solid black tights, I think my count is now at 3 including fishnets . I'm overdo for an order to sockdreams. I made a run by Rugged Warehouse where they have $1.99-$5.99 tights and they were pretty much cleaned out. I hope I can find a few good pairs because winter is just starting and having an all-pants winter does not sound like fun.

I really love the layering of this look. It's not really a going out of the house look, but it's perfect for puttering around the house.

Doodle Week: Day 2

Sweater - Carhartt, thrifted
Jeans - Mossimo, swap
October Boots - Miz Mooz, ebay

Cuddling up in my oversized sweater today. This is the second 99c merino wool sweater I picked up. I literally squeed because the sweater was in D's size. He doesn't have a ton of winter wear, but I couldn't resist wearing it at least once myself. I have my very last final of the semester tonight, so I'm opting for warmth and more warmth to trudge in to take my last test.

I decided to go for skinny jeans tucked in my good-for-snow boots. I was originally going to wear my NY&Co jeans, but my half of a swap from Keely came in yesterday! These roughed up jeans tuck into boots much better than my other skinnies. I thought about a belt or other waist-definer, but I didn't want to ruin the comfort.

See that snow on the ground?!?! It's crazy! It never snows in December, at least in Tennessee.. It usually waits around until January where it sleets for my birthday. At least I won't have to be out in the snow for much longer. What's your favorite way of beating the snowy-cold?

Doodle Week: Day 1

 Cloche - Target
Sweater - Express, shortened
Skirt - Victoria's Secret, thrifted
Boots - Miz Mooz, endless

It's Doodle Week! In honor of my 300th post, my Christmas giveaway and pre-week planning before my last final, I'm doing a week of doodles.

My Fashion Doodles are "doodles" because I don't spend more than 30 minutes on them, nor worry about making them "perfect". They've gotten more 'finished' since I've switched to using a digital medium, but I still consider them doodles because I draw  doodle them while watching tv, listening to music or otherwise multi-tasking.

It started purely as a way to 'try on' outfits without actually putting on the pieces. It allowed me to think and create. The outfits don't always pan out as nicely as the drawings do, but it gives me a great starting point when I'm feeling 'stuck'.

This outfit was completely planned around the skirt. I found this on my last thrifting trip. It was a whole 4 dollars, but I wasn't sure where this skirt would 'go' with much I owned. It's one of those "not-colors". I've decided to pretend it's a dark taupe since it's neither black nor brown nor grey. So, of course, I paired it with all three, proved myself wrong and am very excited to remix this skirt.

I also wanted to give a shout-out of Thanks!! to Sal of Already Pretty for including my thrifting tips post in her link line-up.

Wendy B and Sister Wolf

Wendy B has set up a super sweet deal for her friend and fellow blogger, Sister Wolf. She offered to donate $35 from every purchase of a $50 Little Woolf necklace, and now donate $200 of the purchase price of her famous swear-ring set or its close relative, the OMG ring set, to Sister Wolf.

Sister Wolf is in need of roof repairs. Read Wendy's blog about it here. While I'm not currently in position to purchase anything, I'm spreading the word. (And reminding friends/family that jewelry makes a great Christmas gift!)

FunFriday

 Cardigan - Banana Republic, thrifted
Dress - All Saints
Leggings - gift
Pumps - Fly London, amazon
Belt - Betsey Johnson

I'm having a little day off before going back to studying. I'm pretty psyched about finals this semester. I feel really confident. Also.. finals is a bit of a misnomer, more like "final". I finished up my last big project for my psych class which counts as our final. Now I just have to show up for the other presentations and then take my English final.

I had such a good little thrifting trip that I had to plan outfits around my new pieces right away. First up is this cardigan. It's a light silvery grey. 100% merino wool. By Banana Republic. It would have run me about $70 retail... I paid: 99c. Score! It is one of the warmest and softest things I own.

I wanted to wear my black dress. Instead of tights or thin leggings - I have these things. They are basically like sweat-pants only in leggings form. So ultra-thick and warm. The only way they could be better is if they had a foot-covering area.

I want to fill today with some amount of productiveness, so I'm thinking of doing a Doodle Week! Every day of next week will be accompanied by a doodle. This will help me by both pre-planning my outfits for the week AND by giving me something fun to do today. Just need to sit down with the Weather Channel to start planning.

From the Vault:

Sorry for being a crappy cell pic, this was pre-digicam for me.

I've been feeling a bit nostalgic lately. I think it tends to come around at the end of a year. I'm hoping to do a round-up post for the year at the end of December and some what I learned type posts.

This is an outfit that I wore in July 2009. Two months before I really started "getting dressed". I was beginning to try out different cuts of jeans, those black flats were my first pair of non-sneaker, non-boot shoe that I actually wore. In hindsight, I really love the way that top fit me. I probably wore it 2-3 times before getting rid of it. It had an open crocheted back detail and a defined waist, which I wasn't used to.

If you have a blog, has it made an impact on your style? Do you think it's been a good experience for you?

I feel like I've changed in new ways through my blog. I'm still playing all the time with different styles and pushing my comfort levels. I'm really happy with how far I've come with my style.

Make the Most of Your Next Thrifting Trip

Many people, myself included, love digging through racks of mish-mashed clothing from across the decades to uncover special gems. Thrift stores can bring you unique pieces at low prices. Trends often come around again, and can be picked up for cheaper than "fast-fashion" at thrift stores. My approach to thrifting has always been pretty consistent.

Find your scene - Scout of your town or city. It may take a quick search on google and a few trips to see what stores appeal to you most, but you'll begin to see what stores appeal to you.

Look for good turn over. You don't want to be browsing the exact same racks of clothes week after week. Good stores will rotate on a system to keep stock flowing. Some thrift stores are cleaner and better organized than others. While it may be nice to have a general since of organization - the prices tend to reflect the amount of work put into presenting them to you. So if you're willing to dig through bins, you may find rock bottom prices.

Know your store - My local Goodwill isn't the cheapest thrift store I've ever shopped in, but they offer extra discounts in a multitude of ways: 50% Color tags, 99c Wednesday and Sunday, once a month 50% everything Saturday, Discounts for spending $25, student and senior discounts! Not to mention the lack of sales tax on used clothing. I've learned that my Goodwill gets many new clothes, tags still attached, donated. I've found a good percentage of the clothes are like new or are new.

Branch out - I've thrifted many places. My family were big into bargain shopping. We even hit many thrift stores and vintage shops in Gulf Shores, AL. I've gone thrifting in Nashville since it's a 'bigger city' than my little town. I've had a lot of luck, but unless I'm already heading to a new place, I tend to stick to my local shops.

Touch, Try, Buy - Thrift stores often host that "funny" smell, which usually puts my OCD into overdrive - but I remind myself I wash and so do clothes. One of the most important senses to you while thrifting is touch. Running your hands on different fabrics might find you a delicate silk top or a plush cashmere sweater. I usually run my eyes ahead of my hands for those pieces that visually catch me, but my hands may pull me back to a piece I might have overlooked.

Don't stay confined to your "size". Numbers and Letters only tell you so much about a garment. So, always look a little above or below your size. I have a good eye for what fits myself, but it never hurts to try something on if your thrift store has available changing rooms.

If you love it, don't leave it! I've had a few times where I waffled over something and figured I'd go back the next day if I really wanted it. This works in regular stores, but there is no guarantee that something will be there tomorrow. I still regret passing over the pink and green argyle cardigan a few weeks back. I got lucky a few times, but it often involved combing over the racks again since things got moved around. I've learned to either grab it or leave it.

Extra, extra - One final thing to keep in mind, many pieces may have become donated due to easily fixable "problems". A pair of pants may have a lost button. A hem may have come undone. If you're particularly handy, these can be fixed at home. If you're like me and create mayhem around sewing machines, remember your local tailor. So if you find a special piece with a minor problem, you don't have to turn it down. Get it and fix it.

Day behind

 Purple tee - from Keely
Toria Cowl - All Saints
Jeans -  NY&Co
Boots -  Miz Mooz October, ebay

Many of my photos are going to be running a day behind this week. Finals are next week so I'm a bit disorganized. This is yesterday's outfit. Lots of layers for a day that didn't get above 30F. Knee high boots, thick socks, favorite jeans. Layered tops.

I did a little shopping and ate Chinese food yesterday. I'm nomming my leftovers for lunch. Nearly done with my Christmas shopping, still gotta find something for my mom (Who's impossible to shop for). Aaand my computer is making a lovely grinding, jet engine noise so I apologize if I don't get to my blogroll today.

Go check out Hillary's look today! It's very similar to my Bumblebee look (Though technically her look came first!). I love her stripey scarf!

Pixie Power

Green skirt/dress - One Clothing, thrifted
Olive fishnets, Cardigan, Belt -  Rugged Warehouse
Earrings - Claire's
Bracelet - gift from Sarina
Boots - Miz Mooz, via endless

This outfit is part protest - part excitement. It snowed yesterday and a bit today. Nothing like anyone else is getting.. it melted, but it's stayed gross and cold. The green and browns are to pump some color into my life. The inside pictures are because.. well it's gross and cold outside.

Now onto the excitement~ This is one of the new-to-me skirts I got last week. I realized that it worked pulled up as a dress. I've done similar looks here and here. I'm honestly not certain if it's supposed to be a strapless dress or a skirt. The seaming could suggest either way. I think it'll be fun to restyle as a dress in warmer weather.

I got the olive fishnets a couple weeks ago and couldn't come up with a good outfit to wear them with. They ended up nearly the same shade as the skirt. I think I like the idea of fishnets. This pair was $1.99 so I wouldn't be wasting a ton trying them out. I'm maybe planning to order some in white or beige. I added brown wool socks are under the boots for extra cozy warmth.

Pink? Kinda.

 Tee - Esprit, gifted
Blazer - A.Byer, swap
Jeans - NY&Co.
Shoes - Eject, ebay

Today Hubs and I dealt with the aftermath of yesterday's remodeling. We packed up all the junk and took it to Goodwill. Which meant I went shopping while he dropped the stuff off. I managed to find 2 AWESOME skirts for spring. I would have come out with more, but I had to get back home so D could get to work.

This outfit is one of those that you look in the mirror and go "Hey this looks cool!" but the photos? Look nothing like the mirror. The tee is a pale grey-pink. My mom grabbed this shirt intending it to be a 'lazy day' or sleep tee for me, and I really liked the graphic and the color. But then D realized it was big enough to fit him, and he stole it. He stole my pink shirt. Well I got payback today and wore it. Pink and I can be friends. In limited doses. (I'm sorry if the shirt appears white. It's pink, I promise).

Keep a look out this weekend. I have a surprise post coming up!!

Sniffle and Shiver

Circle Scarf - gift
Tee - JCrew, thrifted
Jeans - Celebrity Pink
Boots - Fly London, amazon
Gloves - vintage

How I feel with outdoor shoots!
I'm pulling out my heavier scarves and gloves. It's chillychilly. Today's my working day. I'm hoping to begin tackling projects around the house, namely tackling the closet. I started today with a hot shower and bowl of turkey noodle soup. I threw on an outfit from my list, something comfy to move around in. Although I never can get this scarf to lay right, I still love it. It has a half-turn twist in it which makes it difficult to manipulate.

Hubs and I ran outside for picture, and I felt seriously frozen. The first photo is how I usually 'pose' the second is how I feel! I'm a total wimp when it comes to cold weather. But my house has terribad lighting in it and if the sun is out and it's not pouring rain, I'm braving the cold.

Bumblebee

I essentially did this same outfit back in February. I wore black pants instead of jeans. I added a belt inside my cardigan to help waist definition a little better. I remember feeling frumpy the last time I wore this combo. I like it loads better with the jeans though.

Trying hard these days not to window shop too much. The holidays are just around the corner (and my birthday right after). I haven't really been swayed by any "Big Deals". I've gone looking through a few stores but the 'deals' people are raving about don't really seem like good deals. Especially since when I really go bargain hunting I find jeans like the ones I've got on for $3.What's the best deal you found this holiday season?
